my Canon printer won't let me select the black ink cartridge
I'd appreciate it if someone could help me with a problem I'm having
with my Canon Pixma 250 printer.
The colour cartridge has nearly run out, but the black and white
cartridge still has plenty of ink in it. As I only want to print out
some letters, I've tried selecting 'use black ink cartridge only' (or
whatever the wording is).
But then when I try to print, I get a message that looks something

I'm running Windows XP Pro with a Lexmark Z22 printer. Often when I try to
print, the printing notification widow pops up. As usual, I hear "Printing
started," but nothing happens while the seconds are ticking away on the
clock. If I try to cancel the job, then check the printing queue, the job
is still there, marked "Deleting." The only way to get it to print is to
restart, then it works (until the next time). The only way to delete the
unsuccessful print job is to go into task manager under Processes and try to
guess which process to delete. This works, when I g...Files won't display, directory won't delete, drive won't format
After having a few slow-access problems, I ran a virus scan (McAfee) on my

and files which I didn't recognise: I didn't note any full pathnames, but a
typical one was something like D:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21... Dd159.zip . I
wondered if this was anything to do with the Recycle bin, despite the fact
that I'd emptied it immediately before the scan.
No viruses were detected, but when I ran an error check I got the message
"the scan could not be completed".

I have an HP photosmart 7550 and I just changed the black ink cartridge and
printed a calibration page and it looked fine. I went to print a Word
document and the print head was moving like it is printing but the page came
out blank. I changed cartridges and it happened again, so I don't think
it's the cartridge (unless I happened to have 2 bad carts, but what is the
chance of that?). The HP toolbox says the ink level is full.

I have an Epson printer. When I changed out the black cartridge this time
it wouldn't print. After many hours of frustration - trying a different new
cartridge, printing in colors, cleaning printing heads repeatedly,
uninstalling and reinstalling driver, and communicating with Epson - I have
discovered this morning that it may not be the printer. I installed a
different printer, hp officejet 6100 all-in-one, went through all the
software installation procedures and finally attempted to print the document
from yesterday. Did not print in black ink??? I printed the sa...Can't print PDF files on Postscript printer
I have a postscript laser printer that prints everything except PDF
files. Anyone know what the deal is with PDF files? What makes them so
troublesome to print? Anyone know of a fix?
The laser printer that I have is a 1987 QMS-PS 810 (postscript level 1)
with 2 MB RAM memory (for print jobs, I guess) and 1 MB ROM memory (3
printer emulations and 35 resident fonts). I'm running Windows 2000 with
512 MB memory. Everything else prints fine, but when I try to print a
PDF file, the print job initiates but then fails. Instead of the
expected output, the printer will print an error message. Error messages
vary. Here are three typical:
OFFENDING COMMAND: ISOLatin1Encoding
STACK: (long list of /items)
OFFENDING COMMAND: dict
STACK: (long printout of postscript gibberish)
(From what I've found, the VMerror indiates virtual memory full, printer
out of memory, something exceeds the postscript interpreter's memory or a
postscript language line in it.)
This job requires more memory than is available in this printer.
Try one or more of the following, and then print again:
For the output format, choose Optimize for Portability.
In the Device Settings page, make sure the Available Postscript Memory
Reduce the number of fonts in the document.

So, I've done everything I can find to do; Set optimize for portability;

Any suggestions for clearing a black ink problem?
I have tried the regular clean cycle twice and the print pattern is much
worse now than before.
I have changed the cartridge and the pattern was different but still very
poor (about 5% of what it should be)!
I have used the SSC utility that is knocking around on the Net, but not
again!! This maybe should be a warning.
I used the selective black only head clean three times which made no
difference except it sucked about 50% out of black and emptied two of the
colours that were at around 80%!!!!

A while back (3/18) I posted here about problems I had with a
newly-purchased Canon S530D. Every time the printer had been idle for more
than an hour or even less, I had to go through a black ink cleaning cycle or
else the ink would typically fade to nothingness after the first few head
passes. Color inks were never a problem. Various posters suggested turning
the printer off after each use (which forces a cleaning on powerup anyway, I
suppose), though I thought that was not reasonable. Because of the nature
of the symptoms, it seemed more like a capillary action problem rather than
a clog to me (for what my mental model is worth).
Struggled with the status quo for far too long, then when everyone else was
out of the house on vacation, I took the printer to the local authorized
Canon center. They confirmed the behavior. Under warranty, got a new
printhead, and some sort of capping/spittoon/cleaning assembly (what, I'm
not sure). Bottom line, it now prints first time, every time.
Just thought a happy ending story might be nice.

said it was a problem with the motherboard not posting. (I believe this is a

Even with a new Power supply, nothing seems to power up. Even the floppy

Any help appreciated.

Are you using an X-Calibur accelerator? It is incompatible with the A4091
and, with my configuration, it hangs just after loading its software, when
it resets the Amiga.
I am curious about how to bypass the SCSI controller in the A4000T...

What do you mean by "Load and lock"?
There is a problem with NikonScan 4.02 with the LS-4000 if the software

Yes. Open the PPD for the printer in question and search for the keyword
"InputSlot". You'll have to insert the specific PS calls, eg.
<</ManualFeed false/MediaPosition 0>> setpagedevice
BTW: If you're using CUPS on the server, CUPS can do the job (inserting PPD
features) for you. Query the PPD options of a specific queue via
lpoptions -p $printer -l
and have a look for InputSlot, eg.
InputSlot/Medien-Quelle : Upper *Middle Lower LargeCapacity
When printing, you use eg. "-o InputSlot=Upper" to change the default. The
appropriate commands will be fetched from the PPD and inserted into the
PostScript sent to the printer by the pstops filter.
...How does the printer choose which black ink to use when it has pigment and dye based black ??
I just ordered a Canon iP4500, which has two black cartridges, a dye based

When you print out a page that is mostly text, but has colour on it as well,
does it still use the pigment based ink? What about if you print out a
colour map from Google Maps, for example? What about a PDF file of a
magazine page, which is text, but with a light coloured background (maybe
with a pattern)?
Would it just use the dye based ink for these types of page, or does it
somehow know what is type or not? I could imagine that being easy with a
