active entries in TCL/Tk

I have some information which I wish to place in an entry.
The entry I place it in will be the entry in which the user
has placed his cursor. How do I find which entry that is?

[focus] will return either the name of the window with the focus, or
an empty string if no window in the current application has focus.

But it is not the name of the window I want but
the name of the entry within the window. There
are several entries in this window.

[focus] returns the name of a widget. An entry is a widget. The widget
with the focus is the place where characters go if the user starts to
type, and every application (perhaps what you think of as "window") can
have only a single widget that has focus at any one time.

Try it. It *is* what you want... ;^)

I'm looking at my manual; it seems to say that
focus is a command that focuses the input onto
a widget. My experiments seem to show that
TCL returns nothing to this command. I need
a path to a widget or something.

What I want is for the user to move
the focus and for me to know where it is.

Just to give a sample of what I'm trying

% entry .e1
..e1
% pack .e1
% focus .e1
% focus

I'm trying to get TCL to produce an output which
I can send back to Lisp.

Most likely you are typing that in an interactive session, which likely
means the focus is not in the entry, it's in the window you are typing.
Many window managers only give focus to a window when it is the top-most
window.

Another way to say it is, just because you request focus (with "focus
..e1") doesn't mean the window manager will grant that request. This
depends on the window manager and is beyond the control of tk.

If [focus] returns nothing, then it truly means that your application
does not have focus.

If you're doing this interactively, try this code:

    entry .e1
    pack .e1
    after 10000 {puts "the widget with focus is [focus]"}

Then, in less than 10 seconds, use your mouse to click in the entry
widget you just created. Wait until 10 seconds have elapsed and you'll
see the widget name printed out.

Brian's previous response is correct (as usual... ;^) ).

You can't really test the results of the [focus] command interactively
(at least on Windows), as the "console" window must have focus in
order for you to "type". Since the console has focus, your app
doesn't - which means that the [focus] command returns nothing.

When I tested this (before my original response), I had to use [after]
in order to get the expected result from an interactive session.

In a running application, [focus] *will* return exactly what you
want - the name of the *widget* that has focus - if one exists. If
you get nothing back from [focus] in your running application, then
nothing in your application has focus.

I think if you'll just try it out, you'll see that it really does do
*exactly* what you want.

to see what you are doing you could set it up like this:

<wish script>

bind Entry <FocusIn> {+
	puts stderr "%W : enter"
}
bind Entry <FocusOut> {+
	puts stderr "%W : leave"
	set var [ %W cget -textvariable ]
	set cont [ set $var ]
	puts  "%W : \"$cont\""
}

entry .e -textvariable ::text
pack .e
</script>

Opening a TCL program from within another TCL program in ANSYS Tcl-Tk
Hi everyone, I have been pulling my hair with this one for a couple of days and still have not found a fix. I'm working within ANSYS Tcl-Tk implementation. I created a Tcl-Tk script that generates a simple window with three buttons. Each button opens another window which is created in a separate Tcl file. The second window have a lot of text entries, variables, procedures, etc. I can open the second Tcl file by itself and everything works as supposed, but when I open it using the button in the first window, it opens but any procedure called by the widgets on the second window are not found... Here's the deal... Since I'm working within the ANSYS implementation of Tcl-Tk, I'm actually using an ANSYS command to open the second window. The command I use is: ### ans_sendcommand ~eui,'source O:/mad_projects_2/ANSYS/Macros/ IBR_CAS.tcl' ### It actually sends a command back to ANSYS telling it to execute a Tcl command... I know this is not pretty but its the only way i was able to make it at least show the window. ############################## #Main Tcl (excerpt): ############################## namespace eval Tools { proc IBRCambpell {} { #source O:/mad_projects_2/ANSYS/Macros/IBR_CAS.tcl ans_sendcommand ~eui,'source O:/mad_projects_2/ANSYS/Macros/ IBR_CAS.tcl' } proc viewManager {} { ans_sendcommand ~eui,'source O:/mad_projects_2/ANSYS/Macros/ ViewManager.tcl' } proc powerAnnotation {} { ans_sendcommand ~eui,'source ...

This is an announcement for a relatively new Tcl project: tcl-mp Tcl-mp is a Tcl interface to POSIX Message Queues*. It provides a Tcl package that allows scripts to create/open/close/unlink multiple parallel message queues, and to send/receive messages synchronously and asynchronously to/from them. * A POSIX message queue is an Inter-Process Communication mechanism available on Linux and some other POSIX-compliant operating systems. It allows to or more processes (or threads) to communicate under the same OS. The messages are buffered by the kernel, which gives them kernel persistency. Threads with adequate permission can put messages onto the queue, and threads with adequuate permission can remove messages from the queue. Each message is assigned a priority by the sender, and the oldest message of highest priority is always retrieved first. Unlike PIPES and FIFOS, no requirement exists that someone be waiting for a message to arrive on a queue, before some process writes a message to that queue. [Tcl/Tk Community] We need *urgent* advertisement among CS students about Tcl in GSoC 2009
Hi! I'm Tomasz Kosiak. This year I have an honor to officially serve as an administrator for Tcl/Tk Community involvement in Google Summer of Code 2009 program. I would like to ask all broad Tcl community members to help us reach students worldwide and encourage them to apply for a summer scholarship. If you have never heard of Google Summer of Code (aka GSoC) it is a Google, Inc. sponsored initiative to fund aproximately 1000 student scholarship $4500 each for coding during a summer for ideas freely chosen by approved open-source organization. Tcl/Tk community is approved again by Google this year (second time). We seek opportunities to advertise among CS students our GSoC project ideas. That is why I have prepared one slide info about Tcl/Tk and GSoC. This e-mail can be freely forwarded directly to prospective students or to your fellow university teachers so they can show this slide for their students. The goal is to reach students worldwide willing to apply to Tcl/Tk as mentoring organization. See Tcl/Tk GSoC 2009 in a pill at http://tinyurl.com/tcl-gsoc2009 and this is the only URL students shall write down to get started. Official news about Tcl/Tk GSoC 2009 is at http://www.tcl.tk/gsoc/ and http://wiki.tcl.tk/22182. We, Tcl mentors and admins, are really willing to help students prepare their applications. This is what our community is fond of. As last year we *do* plan to act as umbrella organization for other Tcl-related projects like Tk, XOTcl, Expect, AO...
