Compiling TK : configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables

Hi,
I've tried configuring TK by following the 'How to compile TCL'
instructions at http://www.tcl.tk/doc/howto/compile.html. Problem
occured when I type ./configure. The output at the shell is like this
:

loading cache ./config.cache
checking for ranlib... (cached) ranlib
checking for gcc... (cached) cc
checking whether the C compiler (cc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler
cannot create executables

Please advise what to do.

It's telling you you lack a working C compiler. What you
should do is ... get a C compiler that works.

With what operating system are you experimenting?

Since it says "cached", my guess is that you are building from sources that aren't "clean", that they have been used to build on another system. Don't do that. The best way to build is to build outside the source dirs, with different directories for each build-type and platform. You just call /path/to/tcl/unix/configure --with-options ... make alternatively you can try a 'make distclean&#...

Hello; The Solaris environment is killing me... I wanted to install Midnight Commander but I saw that it needs to be compiled. To compile Midnight Commander I downloaded gtk but I couldn`t install gtk. Because it needed many other dependency packages. I downloaded other dependency packages and I couldn`t have installed even them. I am really very angry at the moment. Then I found something/script `pkg-get` from www.blaswave.org and run it. Pkg-get installed many things by downloading them somewhere from internet. Actually I don`t know where am I now? Because when I run ./configure to insta...

Problem with compiling a C language tcl/tk package
I posted the info below several weeks a go, but got no response. The subject may have been the problem :( [It was 'tktray package - System Tray Icon Support for Tk on X11'] Anyway, I needed a way to implement a trayicon under Linux and found the 'tktray' package, which needed compiling. Unfortunately I got a serious error. I have contacted the developer, but have had no response. I've tried to compile it to create the dynamic link libraries (*.so), but I get the following error in running the make command: [rob@gandalf tktray1.1]$ make gcc -pipe -DPACKAGE_NAME=\"tktray\" -DPACKAGE_TARNAME=\"tktray\" -DPACKAGE_VERSION=\"1.1\" -DPACKAGE_STRING=\"tktray\ 1.1\" -DPACKAGE_BUGREPORT=\"\" -DSTDC_HEADERS=1 -DHAVE_SYS_TYPES_H=1 -DHAVE_SYS_STAT_H=1 -DHAVE_STDLIB_H=1 -DHAVE_STRING_H=1 -DHAVE_MEMORY_H=1 -DHAVE_STRINGS_H=1 -DHAVE_INTTYPES_H=1 -DHAVE_STDINT_H=1 -DHAVE_UNISTD_H=1 -DHAVE_LIMITS_H=1 -DHAVE_SYS_PARAM_H=1 -DUSE_THREAD_ALLOC=1 -D_REENTRANT=1 -D_THREAD_SAFE=1 -DTCL_THREADS=1 -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE=1 -DTCL_WIDE_INT_TYPE=long\ long -DHAVE_STRUCT_STAT64=1 -DHAVE_TYPE_OFF64_T=1 -DUSE_TCL_STUBS=1 -DUSE_TK_STUBS=1 -I"/usr/include" -I"/usr/include/tk8.4.11/generic" -I"/usr/include/tk8.4.11/unix" -I/usr/X11R6/include -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -Wall -Wno-implicit-int -fPIC -c `echo tktray.c` -o tktray.o In file included from /usr/include/tk8.4.11/generic/tkPort.h:34, ...

Problem in calling c programs and compiling them in tcl/tk
Hello, I have been assigned to open a directory with c programs in it using tcl/tk. Later I am supposed to c ompile all those c programs in that directory one after another using tclk/tk. I am able to open the directory and read all the c files. But when it comes to compiling them am not able to do it at all. I have tried using exec gcc filename.c and later exec ./a.out filename.c. For example , if i take helloworld.c program & write above 2 steps , its showing the o/p as "helloworld" . But it's also saying like child process exited abnormally. Please can one suggest a simple command to execute c programs . All the fork and thread concepts are quite new and confusing to me. Isn't there any simple command in tcl from which i can call a c program and compile it ? I have spent nearly 4 days about this problem. But no idea at all. Please if anyone can solve this , reply soon , if possible with an example . I am supposed to complete it with in 1 day more. Compile/Configure Apache 1.3.31 problem without error message
Hello out there! I am trying to compile the recent Apache HTTPD 1.3.31 on my small home server (Athlon 750 MHz, 512 MB RAM, 8 GB HDD). My problem is: Every simple ./configure (with none, more or less parameters) is broken down at the sanity check without any visible error message as you can see at most compile problems. I tried it with SuSE 9.1 and with Fedora Core 2, always the same result. Googling about it for 2 days, but I found nothing. Everyone with compile problems seems to have more or less a kind of error message here (like make not found, gcc error message). When I enter - just for fun - the compile command for dummy.c on my own, GCC works and ends, without any message. I hope somebody can help me because I think this problem cannot be too hard as the compiled Apache and other things at work on other machines so often. Here you see what I got on my last try (Fedora Core 2): root@zoolserver apache_1.3.31]# ./configure --prefix=/server/apache/1.3-branch Configuring for Apache, Version 1.3.31 + using installation path layout: Apache (config.layout) Creating Makefile Creating Configuration.apaci in src Creating Makefile in src + configured for Linux platform + setting C compiler to gcc + setting C pre-processor to gcc -E + using "tr [a-z] [A-Z]" to uppercase + checking for system header files + adding selected modules + using builtin Expat + checking sizeof various data types + doing sanity check on compiler and options ** A test compilation wit...

Problems with ld: Unresolved error C++ compiling error
Hi Everyone, > The problem that I have involves program that searches for a certain string within a file. As seen in the code, I have declared a Strings class which overrides the string class in C++. Inside of this class, it has a function called findStr (replaces the find in string.h) which will return a 0 when it is able to find an occurrence within the file. If not, it will return a -1. The Strings.h has the function Get_Line which is defined and the error is shown below: Strings.h: void get_line( istream & ); > ld: Unresolved: > String::get_line(std::ba...

C Compiler cannot create executables
Did someone by chance got an error like this with configure? I'm seeing it with GCC 4.5.2 and sh, ash, pdksh. It seems I can't move further. Please note that this doesn't occur with any configure script I try to run. It seems somehow related to moztools/config.site-nozbinfiles script. By the way, how does configure select the config.site script? Thanks in advance. frustating error compiling openssh3.7p1--> checking for libwrap... configure: error: *** libwrap missing
Hi, I am not sure whether I am missing something here thats simple But I put an hour and half and couldnt get past this. I have already compiled and installed openssl with zlib. I am trying to compile openssh3.7p1 with tcp wrappers. I have compiled tcpd from Casper Dik's code. I copied libwrap.a and tcpd.h into /usr/lib and /usr/local/include respectively and tried to do the configure with ../configure --prefix=/usr/local/openssh-3.7p1 --sysconfdir=/etc/openssh-3.7p1 --with-tcp-wrappers type libwrap.a libwrap.a is /usr/lib/libwrap.a type libwrap libwrap is /usr/lib/libwrap (I copied libwrap.a to libwrap as the error says its looking for libwrap and not libwrap.a) I dont understand why it cant use any one from /usr/lib. Again I tried passing on the whole path after making a copy of libwrap into /usr/local/lib ../configure --prefix=/usr/local/openssh-3.7p1 --sysconfdir=/etc/openssh-3.7p1 --with-tcp-wrappers=/usr/local/lib But that doesnt get me any where as well. I had all these directories in my path. I even tried compiling it with having /tmp/tcpd/tcp_wrappers_7.6-ipv6(directory where I had all my wrapper stuff in) in my path. One more Q--> Is any one starting SSHD out of inetd.conf? How does that work for you? If that doesnt work well or has some other issues I can forget about this error and compile with out tcp wrappers option. Any pointers/suggestions are truely appreciated. Thanks a lot!
