Fail to create pixmap with Tk_GetPixmap in ImgPhotoInstanceSetSize

hi,

after creating a lot of photo images i get following error message:

"Fail to create pixmap with Tk_GetPixmap in ImgPhotoInstanceSetSize"

i found this error message in the file:

tkImgPhoto.c (ImgPhotoInstanceSetSize(instancePtr))

and as far as i understand, it somehow seems that CreateBitmap
(invoked by the Tk_GetPixmap in tkWinPixmap.c) fails, which means that
i am running out of bitmap handles?

any work arround available? any bug fixes? any help?

it's a major problem for me at the moment.. so i am happy for any kind
of hints!

What is the number of images you already have allocated?
What is their width/height (just to get an idea of the required memory).
Do you need all of these images loaded at once?
Perhaps you have run out memory? (Windows will never allow an app
to take more than 600MB :-))

hi,

thx george for replying...

i forgot to tell, that i am also using the "image create compound"
command from tix.

so:

the size is different (eg. 64 x 64, 130 x 30 or even 153 x 113)

but for example: size 153 x 113, number of compound images allocated:
about 900 and it crashes with "Fail to create pixmap with Tk_GetPixmap
in ImgPhotoInstanceSetSize"

compound images: icon + name of the file put underneath

> Do you need all of these images loaded at once?

yes, because it can happen, that there are e.g. 1200 files in one
folder, and we show the files as icons..

i wrote a little test program:

set frame [frame .frame]

set width 200
set height 200

for { set i 0 } { $i < 7000 } { incr i } {

image create photo $i -width $width -height $height

set tmp [image create compound COMP_$i -window $frame]

	$tmp add image -image $i
	$tmp add line -anchor center
	$tmp add text -text $i

	update idletasks
	puts "i $i"
}

result:

789 images and compound images were created ==> then crash with this
error

but trying:

set width 200
set height 200

for { set i 0 } { $i < 7000 } { incr i } {

image create photo $i -width $width -height $height

	image create photo test_$i -width $width -height [expr $height + 10]
	update idletasks
	puts "i $i"
}

result:

2269 images were created => crash with "not enough memory in image
buffer" ==> but with that result i can live!

so it seems to be a problem in the "image create compound" command?

using:
tix8.1.4
itcl3.2
tcl8.4.2
tk8.4.2

anyone out there who has experience with that? or a solution?

if not, then i will have to chuck out the "image create compound", and
create the icon with the filename underneath on my own..
that will maybe do it..

Can you explain what your code tries to do?
You try to write something like a thumbnail preview
in a folder? Creating thumbnails for all files in there is not
a right approach :-) Even windows explorer creates
the images as you browse them.
Anyway, it would be nice to know what you are after.
I am not familiar with the tix extension. The "icon" you
describe in image compound is a small thumbnail
of the larger image, or a windows icon that can be used in toplevel
decoration?

Fail to create pixmap when putting images on canvas (windows)
I am repeating a bug item here as an FYI or matter of interest to other Tk developers who use canvas images on Windows. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Windows, Adding many images about 400+ to canvas (depending on image size?) causes fatal Tk error "Fail to create pixmap with Tk_GetPixmap in ImgPhotoInstanceSetSize". Simply allocating a like number of images (or even many more) does not cause the error. This issue exists in all tested versions of Tcl/Tk 8.4.x, 8.5.x, 8.6b1.1 A demo script with GUI and sample image is attached. Possibly (probably?) relevant history: G. failed to create lock directory. CVS checkout failed
I am working with RedHat 9 and cvs 1.11.6. I can connect just fine to the cvs server from another computer but I cannot checkout a project. This is the message I get: " [gbriceno@dhcp0045 gbriceno]$ cvs checkout test cvs checkout: Updating test cvs checkout: failed to create lock directory for `/home/sscode/test' (/home/sscode/test/#cvs.lock): Permission denied cvs checkout: failed to obtain dir lock in repository `/home/sscode/test' cvs [checkout aborted]: read lock failed - giving up " So far I have not found any pertinent posting regarding this, nor have I found anything related to it in the cvshome.org site. This question may be related to the following paragraph mentioned in section 2.2.2of the cvs manual: The directories inside the repository should be writable by the persons that have permission to modify the files in each directory. This normally means that you must create a UNIX group (see group(5)) consisting of the persons that are to edit the files in a project, and set up the repository so that it is that group that owns the directory. (On some systems, you also need to set the set-group-ID-on-execution bit on the repository directories (see chmod(1)) so that newly-created files and directories get the group-ID of the parent directory rather than that of the current process.) I have a group called cvs and there are users that belong to this group; however, I do not see how to make this cvs group own the cvs dir...

How does the Tcl interpret handle results returned from C-created Tcl commands ?
I've ventured on creating a Tcl command trough a C routine. I've followed the manual guidelines. My C routine checks the validity of a selected option for the currently displayed histogram. Therefore it returns a Boolean value that, according to the C <-> Tcl communucation protocol, I have encoded as TCL_ERROR (= FALSE) and TCL_OK (TRUE). WHenthis command is called in a Tcl proc, the interpreter is supposed to perform two different actions according to the returned Boolean value. How can I fetch this returned Boolean result (TCL_ERROR/ TCL_OK) from the Tcl proc that executes the C-created command ? What if I wrote 1 (FALSE) or 0 (TRUE) in a string and have the C routine return this 1-character string ? Would it be easier to get the result of the teest from the caling TCL proc ? Please, find in the following the code that implements (according to my best resolution) the C-created command and the callind Tcl proc. Tcl script for creating folders on multiple remote servers from local machines and transfer files to those servers into created folder
Hi all, I am newbie in Tcl. I have just started learning Tcl fundamentals I want to code a script that does the following. 1) Reads a file in which server names and corresponding ip addresses are saved. (Approx 5) name1 <space> xxx.xxx.x.xxx name2 <space> xxx.xxx.x.xxx name3 <space> xxx.xxx.x.xxx name4 <space> xxx.xxx.x.xxx name5 <space> xxx.xxx.x.xxx -this is file which will be having server name and ip addresses as above format. 2) Takes 1st name and ip, telnet to the server, enters username and password. 3) creates a directory. 4) Transfers the file via FTP to created directory. 5) logout from the server. 6) Reads second entry in the file repeats from step2 until all server IPs are not covered. I am able to make a directory by using telnet session and by using list (for server name and IPs). But I am unable to use file for getting name and IPs of server. And also transfer a file via FTP to created Directory. Can you please help me Hi kj, I can't help you with all of that. I have no idea how to do that, but from what I know, Expect is the tool you should look for, which seems to work with Tcl as well: http://wiki.tcl.tk/201 I guess you can write a script and Expect knows Tcl commands and extends Tcl with some more commands to do the server/login-stuff. ############################### namespace eval ::srvupdate {} proc ::srvupdate::ReadSrvs {} { set srv_file "../servers.dat" set ret_list [list] if [catch {open ...

How to create a tcl daemon?
Hi, I recently obtained a HP Pavilion DV 4000 laptop and have it dual boot Linux FC4 and WinXP. I soon found out that there is not much ACPI support in Linux ( for this configuration). In particular, shutting the top of the laptop did not suspend (shut down disks and screen...) on the linux side and xscreensaver cannot not suspend the laptop after a period of inactivity. After a bit of struggle and googling I have a C program that can suspend the laptop and can have ACPI invoke the program when the top is closed/opened. Yesterday I wrote a bit of tcl code that watches /proc/interrupts and after a suitable period of inactivity will call my C routine to put the laptop in suspend mode. I would like to run the tcl code as a background daemon. Is there a standard paradigm for "daemonizing" a tcl program? The program does not read or write to stdin/out/err. Hello out there, I could swear that yesterday's Tcl-URL contained a mention of tkpath - but today I don't see it. Did the posting change (in some mysterious way)? Is it me?
