Strange difference between Tcl/Tk 8.4.12 and 8.5.0

Hi, there is a difference between

etcl.exe Tcl/Tk 8.4.12
activestate tcl 8.5.0.0-beta-5

on the calc.tcl demo that comes with the etcl download.

In 8.5: sqrt(2) --> 213562 ...
(No problems with numbers that have non-negative integer square roots)
8.4 was fine.

This is obviously not a problem with 8.5. Rather there is some
difference between the parsers that is resulting in different arguments
being sent to the sqrt function. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can
look at the calc.tcl demo.

Reason is much simpler. It's because with 8.5, tcl_precision default to
0 (i.e. maximal precision) while it defaults to 12 with 8.4.x (eTcl or
any other distrib).

This calc.tcl demo in eTcl distrib is pretty simple (not to say
trivial), and implicitely use this for number formatting, instead of
explictely calling [format ...] to format displayed result. This can of
course be fixed quite easily (and I will do so). To check this is only a
display problem, run it with 8.5 and resize toplevel window to be much
larger, and you will notice sqrt(2) actually returns 1.4142135623730951
but the left part (1.414) is not visible with default geometry.

With Tcl 8.4 (eTcl or other, doesn't matter):
% puts $tcl_precision
12
% puts [expr {sqrt(2.0)}]
1.41421356237
% set tcl_precision 17
17
% puts [expr {sqrt(2.0)}]
1.4142135623730951

While with 8.5:
% puts $tcl_precision
0
% puts [expr {sqrt(2.0)}]
1.4142135623730951
% set tcl_precision 12
12
% puts [expr {sqrt(2.0)}]
1.41421356237

BTW, eTcl running with a 8.4.12 core is pretty old, and several
important issues (most specific to Windows Mobile port, but others
related to ZIP VFS handling and Pixane extension applies to all
architectures), so I suggest you consider a newer release. FYI, version
1.0 final will be there very soon, hopefully as soon as Tcl/Tk 8.4.14
final will be officially released.

Regards,

Eric

tcl 8.5/8.4 difference
Hi TCLers, I've found a strange behaviour in Tcl 8.5.7 and 8.5.5 (vs. 8.4.19) when working with Pgtcl (pgaccess.tcl). The effected code line is (after a successfull database select): pg_result $pgres -assign curr_tabs The variable $pgres contains the correct handle (e.g. "pgsql6.0"), but Tcl 8.5 crashes with the message: Tcl_SetIntObj called with shared object whereas Tcl 8.4 continues without any error. I know that it is hard to analyze this problem without code, examples, .... but maybe the error behaviour brings some 1st idea where to start the search. I will investigate the problem more deeply. Tcl/Tk 8.5 vs iwidget 4.0.2
Hi! I have a developer who is trying Tcl/Tk 8.5 out with a program that he has been using with Tcl/Tk 8.4 . He mentioned some iwidget behavior differences. For instance, he writes: In the disjointlistbox widget the buttonplacement configuration parameter seems to be ignored. In my application it is set to center, and it is centered in 8.4 but not 8.5. Has there been a 8.5 Iwidget release to correspond with the tcl8.4 release? Also noticed some widget background color differences. Where in tcl84 fields and listboxes have gray backgrounds (default) and in tcl85 they are white. I'm noticing changes mostly in the widgets, appear to be cosmetic, except for the -buttonplacement configuration parameter that is ignored in the disjointlistbox IWidget. What kinds of changes has to be made to an Iwidgets program to get, for instance, the widget background colors back to gray? And what about the disjointlistbox widget's button placement? Is that no longer supported, or is there a new argument that helps with this? And is Iwidgets 4.0.2 the right version to be using with Tcl/Tk 8.5.4? Here's a code example: $ cat example.tcl # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- # DEMO: disjointlistbox in [incr Widgets] # ---------------------------------------------------------------------- package require Iwidgets 4.0 iwidgets::disjointlistbox .dlb -buttonplacement center -lhslabeltext "Left Side" \ -rhslabeltext "Right Side" pa...
