Hi:
I'm agonizing over my collapsed NTVDM on my Win XP Pro development
machine (my 16-bit apps start up and stop immediately).
As a last resort, I guess I'll have to upgrade to Win 7 (Pro or
Ultimate).
Question: Will I be able to use cmd.exe (or its analog in Win7) to execute
my older 16-bit stuff apps in Win 7 ?
Thanks for any guidance.
btw, most all my work is done at the command prompt, and I'm lost now.

I still have a command prompt on my Win7 64-bit OS machine...
If you have Win7 Professional or higher, you can download "Virtual
Windows XP" from Micro$haft, at it *will* run 16-bit applications.
Only necessary if you are running the 64-bit version of the OS. The
32-bit version will natively run 16-bit (but not make full use of
system resources).
I miss the Search function in older Windows. What they have now is
*not* intuitive. But this OS does not seem to slow down over time,
like WinXP did.

David:
Prior to my going shopping for Win 7 Professiional, this morning I
downloaded DOSBOX. I have not yet installed it, but will try later this
afternoon, after I complete *another* antivirus scan / run on my development
machine.
Its been 3 hours so far doing this run (using the GMER1.0.15.15281
antivirus package). Supposedly it can repair the damage that the MBR (Master
Boot Record) virus causes. Anyway, it turns out that after all my agony,
I'm left with a non-operative NTVDM sub-system -- and I'm hoping for
miracles after the scan / repair completes.
So, I'll probably try to install the DOSBOX package later this
afternoon.
Thanks for your response.

Installing Win7 will fix this too, since it overwrites the MBR.

Never used it. Let me know how it goes. I have Win7 Pro, and I use

No joy :((
The 8-hour run found no further viruses, and *still* NTVDM 'runs' but
immediately returns without actually executing my 16-bit executable (i.e.,
foxpluse.exe and foxpro.exe) or my older editor TheSemware Editor (TSE).
So, I guess tomorrow I buy (on amazon.com) Windows 7 for $171.
And I'll start using the upgraded editor from The Semware Group: g32.exe
Basically, I now just need a good 32-bit FoxPro/Foxbase/FoxPlus
'look-alike'.
and I suppose that I'll find a bunch of obstacles on my way to getting /
installing Win 7. Oh well ...
Thanks for your comments and the link for the download for Virtual Win XP

I forgot to mention that DOSBOX is a bit 'painful' to use but I'm going
to struggle with it, and see if I can get a batch file working that will
allow me to use foxplus.exe tomorrow on a varity of databases in a bunch of
different directories..
I got a shortcut to DOSBOX on my desktop, and it *does* work. But you
have to use a bunch of 'mount' commands that I haven't tried seriously yet.

reminder: 64-bit Win 7 DOES NOT run 16-bit applications. You could even
install them.
Not too sure if WinXP mode would do ... But if it couldn't, the last
option was to use a virtual machine + win98 image.

David Smith said (in an earlier post that Win 7 with the Virtual Win XP
download *would* allow 16-bit apps to run.
So, I guess I'll order Win 7 Pro this morning.

To: Man-wai Chang & David Smith:
Well., I ordered Win 7 Pro this morning from amazon.com (approx $188
with 2-days shipping)
Now, I'm getting 'panicky' about this because:
- Outlook Express is *not* included in Win 7 *and* I do all of my
newsgroup work thru OE and also my business mail !
- Apparently, I *must* transfer all my current files, etc, etc to
another device (preferable an external hard drive), *then* re-install them
from that drive back to the Windows 7 platform !!
- The Win 7 Upgrade Advisor said to keep the 'oriiginal installation
disks' and use them to re-install (I don't have *any* disks anymore ! --
even my Win XP Pro disks are up north)
What a kick-in-the-crotch !!
Am I misreading this ???
Anybody want to buy a brand-new copy of Win 7 Pro upgrade ?? :((

Virtual Windows XP inlcudes OE.
If you are doing business work, I'd recommend either Thunderbird or
Outlook. OE had too many bugs for "safety".

Not if you get Win 7 *upgrade* form Costco / Sam's / Walmart for about
$140.
I'm not too far from you (email me), and I have a 1 Tb external or
various internal IDE drives (up to 200 Gb) laying around. But your
caveat about source disks is correct.

I'd recommend Fry's Electronics for an OEM copy of Win7 Pro, and buy a
new hard drive while you are there (with which you will qualify for
OEM). Install clean to the new drive, leaving the old one
uninstalled. When installed and updated, power down, install the old
drive, and see what tools Win7 gives you to migrate software /
settings from the old drive.
I am sorry this has been such a big bite out of your time.

It does transfer from OE and Eudora without issue. It requires
Outlook to be installed to transfer from (any form of) Outlook.
Whatever sense that makes.

Don't worry, Windows Live Mail is a free download and it is basically a
modernized OL Express, and is fully compatible.

Small clarification, Outlook Express is basically discontinued and is
superseded by Microsoft's "Windows Live Mail", which is available freely to
everyone. Windows Live Mail, can import all your mail and newsgroup content
from OL Express, and you can also perform that upgrade on Windows XP. and
later move the already upgraded data file to the Windows 7 machine. No
Virtual XP support will be needed.

Ron:
I downloaded and installed Windows Live Mail yesterday, and as you
noted, it imported all my contacts and mail and newsgroups.
It looks quite similar but I sdtill like the old OE better --- seems
simple and more colourful
It also has a 'Sync' button which (I guess) keeps OE and WLM in 'synch.
Currently, I have become a bit more immersed in DOSBOX, and it is
helping me use FoxBase for my wide-ranging 'fingering' of many of my
databases. I tried to use xbscript for this but got bogged down in getting
it to look/feel like Foxbase.
btw, I'm expecting my Win 7 Pro Upgrade tomorrow by Fedex and and I
believe I'll put it away until I go back up north. I'm frightened of it :
((
Thanks for your further comments.

I think the System Builder (OEM in Hong Kong) license requires a full
*BOOTABLE PC*, not just a piece of pheripheral....

Mozilla Thunderbird could replace OE, plus a lot of add-ons. If you need
calendars, there is Mozilla Sunbird. Both are freeware.

It's a good thing to have a backup! Buy a new hard disk to run Win 7,
then copy data from the old disk. Unplug the old disk and keep it as
offline backup. You might want to lock it in a bank vault! :)

Hi:
Well, after a week of agony, I finally got my Win XP Pro NTVDM system
working again with 16-bit apps !
I checked *everything*, and followed all the leads you folks. I went
thru most all the guidance on the Microsoft support site, and copied (from
my other Win Xp server machine) all the 44 suggested files that are the
basis of NTVDM.
But finally, a few minutes ago, I decided to also *copy* the file
'command.com' itself from my server.
That was the fix !
MS said that if command.com didn't work, then copy all the *other* 44
files and replace them. It did *not* say to copy command.com itself ! But
I did copy it and now:
Everything works correctly now. Praise the Lord !!
and Thank You to everyone else.
-Mel Smith
ps. I'll keep my new copy of Win 7 Pro Upgrade for a later time.

Mel,
Glad you got it running. Please confirm that CPU and Win7 are 32 bits. It
is my understanding that 64-bit CPU's from Intel or AMD no longer support
Real Mode for 16-bit programs.

I know my current dev machine is 32-bits. The Win7 Upgrade Ipurchased
says: "32- and 64-bit discs inside"
So, I guess any 'new' machine I buy (let's say a new, powerful Laptop)
should be 32-bit and *not* 64-bit ??
Maybe David can comment ??
Thanks for your observation.

No, this is untrue. These processors all support "real" mode. They
have no problem supporting it when running a 32-bit OS. And they have
no problem on multiple core processors.
It was a strategic decision NOT to incorporate support for "non-flat
memory space" (like more than 4 Gb of RAM on a 32-bit OS), and not to
support "real" mode. The processors both can and do support either.
It simply leaves doors open at low levels, that the OS cannot
protect. And since Windoze is number one, it is the biggest target...

Get a 64 bit machine, and Win7 Pro. If you didn't open the package,
you should be able to get a refund on Win7 Home. Personally, the only
laptop I'd buy is a netbook, and leave the expensive stuff for a
machine I build myself. 6 hours on batteries is a lot less annoying
than 2, and small screens are never as small as "iPhones".
Good work on getting running. I'd helped, if you'd have let me...

David:
I *did* purchase Window 7 Pro (not Home). So, I'll keep it until I get
home to Canada next month.
btw, the Win7 package box says on the outside that its an upgrade from
*Vista*, but I never have had Vista -- only Win XP Pro on my recent
machines. I winder about this.
Thanks for your earlier offer of helping me get my files backed-up. I
want to do that in the privacy of my own northern home where I have stacks
of original CDs, and plenty of time to do and resources to it wrong and
right.
btw, I have 93 subdirs in my "Program Files" sub directory, so I
adequate opportunity for ruining my whole system and *never* getting back up
properly again :(
Your support is valuable to all of us on this ng. Thanks again.

You bought the Upgrade version? Don't worry! You could still do a clean
install with an Upgrade version (by Custom Install twice without
entering the product key).

Hi Mel,
From my experience with an Intel 32/64 bit dualcore processor, let me
add these info:
* it has a dual boot
xp home (32bit) in one partition
windows 7 pro (64bit) in another
on the same machine, and both work (windows7 effectively in 64bit
mode)
* with windows 7 pro (64bit), additionally download and install XP
Mode (a preconfigured VirtualPC image containing XP Pro - for free)
http://groups.google.be/group/comp.lang.clipper/browse_thread/thread/ec1f3e=
ee5fa568cb?hl=3Dnl
(instructions by Geoff Schaller)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx (as David
pointed out)
From within XP mode, NTVDM is available, but the nice thing is that is
you create a shortcut (.pif file) inside XP Mode in the c:\Documents
and Settings\All Users\Menu Start\Programs folder (inside the XP Mode
c:\ (virtual) drive), then shut down VirtualPC, and back in Windows7
this shortcut is directly available which opens a window on the W7
desktop (just like any other normal W7 window), with your 16bit
Clipper app running besides 64bit apps
I have a .jpg showing this (can't post here on usenet)
The only limitation afaik is that the 16bit app cannot be graphic
based (forcing fullscreen mode, which was abandoned since Vista)
HTH
Best regards,
frank
ps: nice to be back online!

Frank:
Thanks for your comments. I'm going to upgrade an older LapTop (which
currently has XP Pro (sp3) on it) to Win 7Pro when I get back to Canada.
THat will serve as a learning tool for me.
The Win 7 Pro upgrade I purchased is specified for Vista (which I've
never owned). So, this means that if I use it everything will be wiped out
even my old Clipper stuff and 'zillions' of other old installations of
programs. Puzzling and terrifying !

Hey Mel,
> I have a .jpg showing this (can't post here on usenet)
You should take a look at http://www.Dropbox.com
With this you can simply copy a JPG to a local folder and you get a
public link to it.
For example:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/390763/SpeedTest.PNG
And best of all. Its FREE ;-)
