Hi Jacek,

Something i could never situate quite right, does it support 16bit console
app, like Clipper's or is for this only Terminal Console appropriate?

And what about 16bit Clipper+Fivewin/clip4win?

tia,

frank

Hi Frank,

There are several variants of Terminal but in general Terminal allows
you to run two types of applications:

1) Unmodified applications. Using wfc.exe/gte.exe client you can run any
32-bit Windows applications. This includes GUI and console applications.
64-bit application support will be available soon.

2) Modified/adapted applications. Application adaptation is made by
linking into them the appropriate Terminal libraries. Only the following
types of applications can be adapted:
- xHarbour 32-bit console applications
- Harbour 32-bit console applications
- CA-Clipper 5.2/5.3 console applications

16-bit GUI applications are not supported, so 16-bit
Clipper+Fivewin/clip4win apps will not run.

To run a 16-bit Clipper applications you need the Terminal Enterprise
which allows running adapted xHarbour/Harbour applications as well.

Terminal version available for download from our site works with all
supported applications.

Regards,
Jacek

Thank you, Jacek

Under 2) CA-Clipper, will it be possible to make use of 50x80 columns soon?
Or even unlimited dimensions?

And what about mouse handling, not INKEY() based? Does this require callback
functionality; at least i suppose the _client_ Clipper progie can be
redesigned with mouse support, but will it communicate about mousing with
the server app also?

That will be all i'd like to find out; thanks again

Frank,

Sorry, but for 16-bit Clipper only 25x80 mode without mouse is supported.

What I can suggest is considering smooth migration to Harbour or
xHarbour which really opens the new world for Clipper apps. For
Harbour/xHarbour mouse and higher console resolutions (up to your
desktop dimension) are supported.

Jacek

Jacek,

Thanks for your great tools for (x)Harbour world, by the way:

What advantages offers rather (f.e.) Terminal Server for a GUI application ?

Sorry my pessimistic english.

Regards

Dear Jacek,

This is fair enough - options with Clipper are always good to know; f.i.
DosBox on >32bit os platforms is very nice, but so far without perspective
(that i'm aware of) combining network functionality

It's not about not willing to migrate beyond, but still for now, taken into
account the work that went into that (o)ceans project i ended up with (tied
to Clipper), it's always intresting to learn about architectures opening up
paths

btw, your Terminal Console product for use with CA-Clipper works right out
of the box, as you commented - the limitations like you mentioned, but
reliable regarding the given options

Lastly, the client side Terminal Console progie can be an xHarbour one
(instead of also Clipper), so it may well be a 32-bit program; does this
mean a >32bit client os can run a server side (xp) Clipper app too? I could
not test such setup

Best regards,

frank

I know what you mean. It would open the way to use 16-bit Clipper apps
from 64-bit workstations. We have seriously considered the possibility
of using xHarbour/Harbour terminal client (thxb/thb/te32) to drive
CA-Clipper application executing on the server.
The main problem here is the incompatible keyboard handling. Of course
it can be done but the world is moving toward 64-bit, so investing the
resources into development of the new 16-bit features seems a little bit
anachronic.

Now we work on releasing 64-bit GUI applications support for Terminal.
Possibly we will reconsider the idea in the future.

Jacek

Hi A.Martnez,

The main advantages of Terminal Server for GUI application are as follows:

- Immediate access to Windows GUI applications from Windows or Linux
client computers
- Seamless application windows integration with the user desktop
- Optimized access to console applications
- Very efficient compression - small network traffic
- Automatic client updates from the server
- Integration into existing intrastructure
- Universal printing modes (automatic printers mapping)
- Two user authorisation methods (Terminal internal or Windows)
- Strong network transmission encryption
- Optional ClearType(TM) fonts usage
- Application Programming Interface (API) to extend the application
functionality (also xHarbour API)
- API for executing remote functions from the client machine (also
xHarbour API)
- Competitive pricing (no need to install Terminal Services)

Jacek
