I've had several laptops, and learned that getting more than an hour and
a half running time was something rare and precious... So I'm looking
for any tips from the group on a reasonably full-featured laptop (no
PDA's need apply) that will give me at least four hours of running time.
Other features that would be useful: Compatible with Linux, small and
lightweight, and cheap... But I'm not "looking for the Holy Grail", so
I'll settle for the longest battery life I can get.

Look for laptops running the 1.0 Mhz Pentium M. Most are small form
factor notebooks with almost full size keyboards and have exceptional
battery life. Exact battery life is too contingent on user preferences
and uses to quote exact numbers.

Thanks for the info. And I'll assume you meant 1.0 Ghz?

Now there's a definitive answer! I'll Google that make and model, and
see if I can afford it. Thanks!

My best todate is on a COMPAQ 700US, AMD Athlon 4 1600, Gentoo, 2.6.11.7
with cpufreqd and laptop-mode.... I can eek out almost 3 hours with "normal
usage".
4 hours would be nice....

That's just unfair, they never let you have those happy medications
unless you're in no condition to enjoy them... Anyway, using your info
and Stavros's, I should be able to make a choice on a laptop. The IBM
X40 looks sweet, but I think I'd miss having a CD drive. Maybe... Uh...
Still thinking that one over...
My current working laptop is a Compaq Presario 1244, (AMD K6-2 300 Mhz,
with 96 Mb RAM. Not exactly cutting-edge technology...) which I've
modified slightly with a 20 Gb hard drive, dual-booting Windows 98 and
Mandrake 10.0 linux. I've decided to avoid any laptop incorporating a
cooling fan. Heat means wasted battery power...

Heat is the major factor in premature failure and instability.
Mainboards/CPU/ and yes even the battery hates heat. I get 5:30 to 6 hrs on
a single battey charge with a fan.
