Cooling laptops and cooling fans

  • Follow

Is there any way to stop the continuous processor cooling fans on my laptop
or is it always supposed to be on.

Anyone have any suggestions on cooling pads/stands for laptops or ways to
cool them down on a desk?

Thanks

I use one of these. Makes a significant difference, laptop is noticeably
cooler.

If it's a P4M, chances are you'll hear your fan running at least
slowly much of the time when it's on electrical power. That's not an
absolute necessity for processor temps, so often it won't run as much
when on battery.

But unless your processor/computer is overheating and behaving
erratically, don't worry about it. I would suggest turning your
notebook over and inspecting the fan intake on the bottom (most have
them). Make sure it's not covered with dust or other foreign debris,
as this will obviously have an impact on its ability to cool. If your
goal is to make the fan work less, in the summer operating it in an
air-conditioned room will obviously help.

There are also progs out there to monitor processor temps, most of
which are put out by third-party firms.
