The Ethernet card is only one part of the connection. Did you make
sure you have your cable modem or DSL device connected to the
computer? Does it recognize the device?
If you're on DSL, more than likely, you need to be connecting through
some form of PPPoE. For cable, more than likely, you're goiing to get
everything through DHCP. In the case of the latter, disconnect your
cable modem for about a minute, let it power up again and re-connect
it to the Ethernet card. That will cause it to register the
appropriate MAC address.

By ethernet "wire", do you mean the CAT 5 cable? What did you plug the other
end of the cable into?

Hi,
From command prompt, type winipcfg(W98), ipconfig(W2K, XP)
to see what happens. Also you can reset router by pushing the button
or turning it on/off.
Also did you configure the ethernet card? Like loading driver for it?
also learn to use ping and net diag command.
