How to format HD in Win 98?

  • Follow

Hi,

I know this isn't necessarily the right group, but I know a lot of smart
people are here. Anyway, I have a Windows 98 machine that I plan to give
away. I want to format the HD so that it's clean when I give it away. How
do I do it?

Thanks,
Gary

You can boot from the CD or make a boot disk to boot from at the prompt type:
format c: /u /q (Remove the /q if you don't want to quick format it.)

FDISK and format should do it.

What I ended up doing was rebooting and holding down the CTRL key. When it
opened up the windows screen, I selected prompt only and then typed "format
c:". That seemed to get rid of everything. Am I wrong?

Thanks again,
Gary

That's fine for the next user. The problem is that your data is still
retrievable by a savvy nerd. If you don't have anything on that hard
drive that bothers you, go for it.

It's not wrong, but there is a possibility of someone unformatting it.
