IBM Thinkpad 600 2645-51U Hard Drive Upgrade
I have an old 266Mhz Thinkpad 600 with a 4 gig drive. Not quite enough space
for me anymore. I have looked at the below drives and have found mixed
reviews on all of them. I was wondering if anyone had any other input on
them. Additionally I was wondering if anyone knows if the BIOS can handle
the larger sized drives, or will it have to be partitioned? Any other input
would be appreciated.
Hitachi DK-23AA-12 12gb 9.5mm 4200rpm $80.00
Hitachi IC25N020ATMR04 20gb 9.5mm 4200rpm $110.00
Seagate ST-92011A 20gb 9.5mm 5400rpm $119.00
Hitachi IC25N030ATMR04 30gb 9.5mm 4200rpm $130.00
Fujitsu MHS-2040AT 40gb 9.5mm 4200rpm $148.00
Hitachi DK-23FB-40 40gb 9.5mm 5400rpm $155.00

Greg,
I have been looking through the net for a second hard drive for my
ThinkPad 600E. Among other things, I found the following note in the
"About Drives" panel of the site http://www.drivesolutions.com/
"Notebook/Laptop Drives are not proprietary to the machines. Any drive
will work in any machine if it will mount correctly. The only
exception is IBM drives should always be used in IBM machines."
FYI.

Aharon;
Fwiw, "IBM drives should only..." is wrong. I've been merrily running
deskstars on sonys & toshiba tecras for 2 years now. Of course, that
business has since been taken over by Hitachi so the issue of *IBM* drives
is moot by now.

Ungoy,
I do not understand you. You are talking about "sonys & toshiba
tecras" while the passage which I quoted is very explicit that "The
only exception is IBM drives should always be used in IBM machines."
Please correct me if I am wrong, since I have no knowledge of "sonys &
toshiba tecras" being IBM machines.
