This either naive or a deep question that has been well-thought out and
simply stated. I can't tell which, so I'll take it seriously:
Windows or Macintosh?
Macs: iBooks go for about $1000; Powerbooks: $1500 to $3000 (approx). In
comparison to Windows machines, Macs are much more powerful because of
the nature of the OS which shows up as flexibility and ease of use. You
can do a lot more with a Mac than with an AMD/Intel machine even though
there is a greater variety of software available for the latter and raw
processor speeds are about the same for both classes. Windows XP boots
faster than OSX Panther, if that is important to you.
Windows with high performance AMD or Intel processors go for $3000-5000
although the general range is $800-1500 and respectable machines that
will run virtually any Windows program can be had for as little as $599
new.
To get a better idea, go to the HP; Dell and Gateway home pages and
layer through to "notebooks".
To get some feeling for esoteric really high end notebooks go to the
eBay web page; search under notebooks enhancing your search with a price
range of $4000 to $20000 and see what comes up.
Hope this helps.
