Need advice.... looking for laptop!

Getting divorced, buying my own place... I do a lot of writing!!!!
So, I'm looking for something flexible and I need a laptop. I want
something new that I won't outgrow. Watching DVD's is essential, as is
having a large 17 inch display for my aging eyes. I'd also be
interested in burning DVD's. Can anyone suggest anything?

Why a laptop, as opposed to a desktop?

If you'll really be using it as a laptop, how important is weight?

Any budget?

Etc., etc., etc.

Some of Toshiba's Satellite line has screens that are that big. Note
that these are really "desknotes"; i.e. they are notebooks, but their
size/weight makes it difficult to routinely transport these from place
to place. But they'd definitely fit the bill and Satellite computers
are really good machines.

Not sure what kind of space I'm going to have or how long it will be
before I'm actually in my own place. I'd rather not have to worry
about furniture for the time being. I think I'd rather just have the
mobility of a laptop. I'm a writer so sometimes it's nice to be able
to write wherever.

There are alot of laptop choices in the market.
here are just some recommendations of the vast selection available today

Apple Powerbook with an Apple Care Warranty
Cons:
- No accidental damage warranty
- Price may be an obstable for some
- Operating system compatibility

Pros:
+ Stylish & Smart slim laptop design (illuminated keyboards with ambient
light sensor)
+ Rugged construction
+ Linux based operating system

Thinkpad with an Accidental Damage coverage & Advanced Warranty
Cons:
- doesn't pack the latest that just came out technologies
- please insert cons
- please insert cons
Pros:
+ Still the best keyboards in the market
+ Rugged construction (meaning the screen hinges, the keyboard keys, the cd
tray, etc...)
+ Sexy Business Machines
