i have a compaq presario 1700, 600 mhz, 512 ram, it worked perfectly for 3 
months till 2 days ago when it shuts down all of a sudden after logon 
screen, exactly some of the startup programs were starting up.

i read all i can of the old messages and did the following , unfortuenately 
, still no luck, any help is greatly appreciated

-cleaned the fan witha  compress air through the fan window and other dusct 
area from the outside

- changed ram

-changed hard drive

-changed battery, powered up only on ac after removing battery
-removed all usb-printer cable and all other cables


-went into bios: shut off power

-bios: reset default


any help is greatly apprciated, laeving tomorrow and i have to get laptop 
with me 

I have an Presario 1800, 650mhz, 320 ram (max on this beast) that at times
boots but all I can see is the COMPAQ   screen but I hear the win xp startup
sounds.

other times it boots up to the Windows XP screen and then basically fades to
white.

I have it dual booted, (done correctly)  and sometimes I can boot to win
98se but then it locks up.

I suspect the bios might be corrupted and/or  the video might be bad.

Like just now I booted it up, all I see is the Compaq screen.

I heard the win xp startup and McAfee start an update.

and still the Compaq screen is the only thing visible.

I will try also this two things:

Try putting some cpu paste (termic cream, i dont know the exactly name in 
english). Some times is like a half milimiter distance between the cpu top 
and the botom of the cpu cooler fan. That can make the cpu to heat and 
shutdown.

Another thing is to take out the drive (cd-rom) and boot the machine without 
the drive on.

Another thing sound stupid, but with the machine off turned without shaking 
(put the laptop in a vertical position first from one side and then the 
opposite) to check if is a loose screw inside.

Also the motherboard can be "touch" by a power surge.
