Toshiba Touch Pad Problem

  • Follow

Hello

New to this newsgroup so don't know if this has been raised before:-

I am trying disable the touchpad on a Toshiba satellite 1900 notebook with
XP Pro Service Pack 1. I prefer an external mouse & find the touch pad gets
in the way sometimes when typing - ie my hand touches/rests on the touch pad
occasionally and causes the cursor to jump around.

The original touch pad driver gives no option to disable (the external mouse
has this option). I have installed the latest Toshiba touch pad driver from
their web site & although it is quite different, it also has no disable
option. I have tried deleting the driver but of course XP Pro senses new
hardware at each bootup & reinstalls the driver. The problem is not "earth
shattering" & I currently just put a piece of cardboard over the touch pad,
which works, but I'm hoping for a more hi-tech solution if possible.

Any help much appreciated.

Greg

Toshiba, at one time in the not so distant past, included a notebook
setup or tools program that had settings for enabling/disabling the
touchpad. This was just an interface to BIOS settings, so you might
also try BIOS setup (F2, Del, Esc, or whatever key Toshiba uses, just
after pressing the power button).

Don't know about your Toshiba, but in my new one the settings are buried
deeply. Control Panel -- Mouse -- Hardware -- mumble mumble. Keeping
going further and further in and check all the options. Somewhere in
there they probably do have a "turn it off."

I'm learning to like the touch pad, but at the moment it acts only as a
mouse--no clicking, no scrolling, etc. Maybe I'm just "challenged" in
some way, but I'd get a finger or thumb too close or stop too long while
moving the cursor and the #*R#)R#_ confuser would go off on its own tangent!

Check your hardware confirm( check the device manager) your Toshiba uses a
Synaptics touchpad. Get the latest driver package from www.synaptics.com.
They will give you much better control than the Toshiba provided driver.

I did not have to disable the toughpad.
I only disable the "taping" , this way I can use it, if i need it, and use
the buttons to do the tapping.

On my Toshiba it's Fn-F8 to enable or disable the touchpad. I find it quite
handy since I use both the touchpad and the mouse.
