Upgrade from USB1 to USB2

  • Follow

My HP pavilion xf255 laptop has 'VIA USB Host Controller, rev 5 or later'.
From http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=298 I learned that this means it is USB
1.0 and cannot be upgraded to USB 2.0 via BIOS update; it must be done via
replacement of hardware.

Does this mean I must replace the mainboard in order to accomplish an
upgrade to USB 2.0, or is there a chip that can be replaced individually?

Are laptop mainboards upgradable as in regular cabinet PCs?

Have a look at something like the Adaptec USB2connect
(Model No. AUA-1420A) card.

One heck of alot easier, not to mention cheaper!

It is unlikely a replacement board exists other than what's in it. Manufacturers don't generally upgrade a portion of a board and
make it available for sale. They usually update a portion of the board and install it into a newer laptop with a different model
number. PCMCIA is about your only option.
