Check Mail returns no mail when in fact there is mail

On my laptop which connects to an SBC DSL internet connection via a wireless
network in our home, both Eudora 6.2 and 7.0 (I downloaded 7.0 in hopes it
would fix this problem) checks for mail, retrieves none and tells me I have
no new mail. In fact, there is mail which I can retrieve through a browser
on the laptop or on our desktop computer. I have all account settings set
identical to the Eudora program on our desktop computer (which connects
directly to the DSL without utilizing the wireless connection). I can send
mail from the laptop just fine using Eudora.

I get no error message when attempting to check for mail, just the dialogue
box telling me I have no new mail. The small circle that appears in the
lower right corner of the status bar turns as it normally does when the
program checks for mail, then in about 2 seconds the dialogue box appears to
say I have no new mail.

Any suggestions for fixing this problem?

Thanks,

Dave.

I can think of two things that can cause this problem. One is having a
corrupt lmos.dat file. Lmos.dat keeps track of messages that have been
downloaded and left on the server. If it becomes corrupted in such a way
that it thinks all the messages were already downloaded, then Eudora will
think there's no new mail to download. The fix for this is to delete the
offending copy of lmos.dat. Each personality has its own lmos.dat file, so
be sure to get the right one if you have multiple personalities.
Dominant's file is in the "spool" subdirectory. Other personalities have
their own subdirectories within "spool" and their files will be in those
subdirectories.

The second cause that I know of is a problem with SSL. If Eudora is
supposed to be using SSL there are some circumstances that can cause it to
not get an SSL connection while thinking it has one. That will cause it to
be unable to see any mail to download. I'm not sure if this happens in
newer versions of Eudora, but it definitely happened when SSL was first
added to Eudora.

Thanks for the reply. The first solution (deleting the lmos.dat file)
did not help -- I deleted all files of this name that a search of the
C drive turned up -- and I take it there is no fix that I can
implement if the second described issue is the cause of the problem.

Your thoughtful response was appreciated anyway.

That may or may not have been good enough. Did you delete the one in the
"spool" subdirectory of your current data directory? That's the one that
matters (assuming that this is your dominant personality). WinXP does not
search for files in hidden directories by default, and the default data
directory is hidden, so it is entirely possible that your search did not
find the file that you needed to delete. (If you don't know where your
data files are stored, go to Help | about Eudora. The name of the data
directory is listed there. Then use Windows Explorer to go directly to
that location and find and delete the file. There's no need to use a
search to find it.)

No, you can fix that in most cases. If you're having a problem with SSL
connections, you need to fix whatever is wrong with your SSL settings.
(Once in a while, the issue is with the server, not your settings. IN
that case you may not be able to fix it, but since you can use your other
computer to get your mail, that can be ruled out.) First, do you actually
have SSL turned on? If not, that's not the problem. Second, does SBC
support SSL connections, and if they do, do they require you to use SSL?
If they don't require it, set the personality that is having problems to
never use SSL for receiving mail. See if that works. If it doesn't, then
SSL is not involved in your problem. If they do require it, you'll need to
find out a few details about how they expect it to be set up. And you'll
need to check on what Eudora says about the last SSL connection.

[Eudora and Mail] Importing e-mail into Mail ?
Hi, After many years using Eudora, I think it is time to switch. Eudora is corrupting its mailboxes, old messages tend to mix up and become unreadable. I imported my email from an iMac g5 to a MacBook Pro running Leopard. Importing Eudora mail into Apple Mail
Having used Eudora for too many years, I now have a real mess in the references to attachments. Many of the attachments are no longer accessible from the messages that they arrived in, even though they are still in the attachments folder. The main issue here is that I have moved Eudora to a new machine every few years, and the startup disk has typically had a new name. This in itself is not a big problem, and Eudora still seems able to find the files. (But it does leave the reference in the mailbox with the old disk's name.) However, the other part of the reference is the...

MS-Windows mail servers and PHP's mail() function
I have a contact form that uses PHP's mail() function. It recently came to my attention that (some?) MS-Windows mail servers may not properly process data given to the mail() function that's only newline-terminated. The mail() function takes up to five parameters: mail(recipient, subject, message, [headers [,parameters]]) The ones of interest here are the first four. The questions are these: 1. Since recipient and subject are not multi-line, and, from the web form, don't even contain newlines, is it safe to assume they need neither newlines nor carriage-...
