I copied and printed all John's posts in the Eudorabb forum about
transfering Eudora to Windows 7, but I'm still having a few "issues."
Here's the background:
1. On this nine year old desktop with XP, I've been running v6.2.3.4.
I started with v5.2 years ago, so when my Data folder was originally
named it was (and still is) called "EUDORA 5.2." I've kept that folder
at C:\EUDORA 5.2 all these years for quick and easy access to the
Attachment and Embedded folders. Never a problem
2. On my laptop, I'm running v7.1 and XP. The Data path is: Documents
and Settings/Jef/ApplicationData/Qualcomm/Eudora. Works like a champ.
3. The new computer runs Win7 64-bit. I'm trying to transfer the Data
from the old desktop to that one.
Per instructions, I let Eudora do its default install into Program
Files x86. I then copied my Data folder (which had been at C:\EUDORA
5.2 on the old computer) to Users/Application Data. To more or less
replicate the laptop's path, I created a User folder called El Jefe
(to replace "Jef"). When I didn't see a Qualcomm folder in it, I
created one and transfered my Data into it. That left me with this
path:
USERS/El Jefe/AppData/Roaming/Qualcomm/Eudora.
Should be correct, right? But I can't open Eudora using either the
desktop icon or the .exe file in the the Program File x86 folder. When
I try I get pop-up error boxes:
"The directory specified in the command line
C:\Users\El
doesn't exist or is not writable." OK
"Cannot start Eudora the first time with attachments. Please start
Eudora by double clicking the Eudora icon or by the command line. "
OK
I'm stuck in a loop! Both of those start options bring up the same
pop-ups!
So, I thought that maybe naming a folder "El Jefe" with a space in it,
instead of "ElJefe" without one, might be the problem. Windows will
not let me rename it.
So, I thought that maybe I should just drop the "El Jefe" idea
altogether, and install the Data under USERS/Default/AppData/Roaming/.
I copied the whole mess there out of the El Jefe folder. I restarted
the computer. No change,I still get the error pop-ups. (I haven't
deleted the El Jefe one yet, though.)
Then the really big wrinkle hit. I was on a web site, and clicked on a
hot e-mail link to send the author a note. Much to my surprise, Eudora
opened! I was able to manually enter the reg info and data for all my
Personalities, and send mail to the author. Of course, all my
mailboxes, filters, attachments, etc from the C:Eudora 5.2 Data folder
are AWOL. And apparently the only way to get the new Eudora 7 install
to open is by clicking on a hot email link on the web somewhere. That
ain't right.
I'm sure this is more info than anyone needs to tell me where I
screwed up. Also, is there any reason I can't put the Data right back
where it was in XP, directly on the C: tree?
Thanks much!

I recently did an install on Vista too. Before starting Eudora, I tried
locating the data folder to copy the old data folder into that and
couldn't find it. So I waited, and first started Eudora.
Apparently, it only creates the new data folder then. It's in the
standard Vista path (whatever that is, you'll find it).
I skipped account setup, exited Eudora, and only then copied the data
from the old computer to the newly created data folder.
Note that during install, you should have specified "use system folder".
Or alternately your own custom path, of course.
But even in that instance, maybe have Eudora do a 'dry run' first before
you try to copy data? Maybe Vista is peculiar in that way too?
(Ehm... that goes for Eudora 7. If you tried to install Eudora 5, I'm
not sure it even tried to set up Eudora for using a separate data
folder, since I don't know at which version Eudora started doing that by
default. I'd recommend installing 7 instead of 5, I think.)

If you both created your own C:\Eudora and told the installer
that this is where Eudora's data is, then this could work.
The conventional way is to let Eudora
both create the "Data" (mail and settings) folder
and tell you where it is.
Assuming that you told the installer to use "user's application data"
for mail, it creates an empty folder for you. When you start Eudora,
skip setup then click "Help" > "About Eudora";
the screen then shows you the "Data" path, e.g. as in this image:
http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=548
If you installed the latest version (7.1), you can click
right on the "Data" path to open it, then close Eudora,
then copy the entire contents (all files and folders)
of your old "Data" folder to this new one.
Another way to open the folder, after installation
but while Eudora is not running,
is to open %AppData%\Qualcomm\Eudora
(type or paste this exact expression)
via either "Run" (WindowsKey+R)
or into the location bar of any "Explorer/MyComputer" window.
Eudora's complaint about non-existing directory or
"can not start with attachment" is due to being given a path
where there is no existing directory.

Try putting quote marks around any path/file name with spaces in the
properties of the shortcut.

Well, I've tried everything you guys suggested. All the paths seems to
be correct. With the exception of the space in the "El Jefe" folder, I
can't find any reason Eudora shouldn't boot from the desktop icon or
the .exe file in the Eudora folder. And so far I can't find a way to
rename "El Jefe" in Win7. There's no right-click/Rename option.
Also, setting up the Data in a different folder called "Eljefe"
without the space doesn't work because Eudora is still pointing at the
other one (per the Help/About Eudora screen).
So:
1. Where is that Data path script hanging out? Can I get into it and
delete the space in "El Jefe?"
2. Even if I did, would that correct the problem?
3. Should I just delete the "El Jefe" folder completely, then
re-install?
4. If so, is there any reason I can't write my own Data path like I
did in XP? (Basically, I just moved the Data to C:\EUDORA, and never
had a problem getting to it.)
Thanks!

You haven't said, this time, what is happening?
Does Eudora start, so that you can go to
"Help" > "About Eudora" ?
If it doesn't get even this far,
please post the first ten lines of file "Deudora.ini"
(note that this file name begins with "D")
which is installed, by the installer,
in the same program files directory as Eudora.exe
Getting Eudora properly installed is simpler
than the proverbial "falling off a log,"
and pretty much the only way to fail
is to do things which were never instructed,
before having learned enough to know how.

I'd love to try that, but W7 won't let me get at it.

Try from an admin account... If one can't edit the "start in"
directory information for user shortcuts, then shortcuts are worthless.

Yes. That is, it will start from a hot email link on a web page, not
from a desktop icon or the .exe file. Help-About Eudora gives the Data
path as C:\Users\El Jefe\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora. The
Application path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Qualcomm\Eudora
>please post the first ten lines of file "Deudora.ini"
Here you go.
[Settings]
NC=1
Code=NC
UseAppData=1
[Mappings]
out=txt,ttxt,TEXT,text,plain
both=doc,MSWD,,application,msword
out=mcw,MSWD,WDBN,application,msword
in=xls,XCEL,,,
out=xls,XCEL,XLS4,,
These settings are identical to the Deudora.ini settings on my laptop
(also using v7.1.0.9 in Win XP). No problems with that one.

"Start in" gives me "C:\Program Files (x86)\Qualcomm\Eudora"
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe"
First of all, are those correct? I know that's where Eudora.exe is.
Secondly, there are spaces after Program and Files in both strings,
but the entire strings are in quotes.

I got about as far as you can go (short of the registry) in the Admin
areas, and still couldn't find a way to edit the path. Opening
Properties/Security shows me the El Jefe Group/User Name, but doesn't
let me edit it.
Otherwise, everything is where it's supposed to be. That's why I'm
thinking it's the space between "El" and "Jefe" that's screwing things
up.

It is sufficient to have the quotes covering the entire path.
Try adding this in the Target field after the path to eudora.exe:
First one space, then:
"C:\Users\El Jefe\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora"

If Eudora has started, and if the "Data" path is _shown_
by Eudora itself as being
C:\Users\El Jefe\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora
then it's been correctly started, and should be running fine --
_provided_ that you had previously copied all your former "Data"
into that path (did you?) Is there an actual disk folder at that path?
>> please post the first few lines of file "Deudora.ini"

"UseAppData=1" is how Eudora remembers that you told the installer
that your mail and settings should be in "User App Data,"
which for user "El Jefe" would be the path quoted above.
When the installer is told a specific path instead,
the above line is replaced by the following:
DataFolder=C:\.... [whatever actual path was stated]
So everything looks fine -- I haven't heard that a space in the path name
should trip anything up, but "Murphy was an optimist" :)
> [Won't start from] the .exe file
Suspicious. Is there a "Eudora.ini" file polluting your
"Application" directory? If so, remove it.
Modifying the Eudora-launching shortcut to force Eudora
to use a particular "Data" path can be a useful band aid
to apply to a slightly mangled original installation,
but wouldn't be necessary if there weren't some original wound.
"C:\.....\Eudora.exe" "C:\....." <== path to any existing "Data" folder
(two individually quoted paths, separated by whitespace)
The "Start in" parameter of the shortcut is normally the path
to the directory containing Eudora.exe, which is the same as
the "Application" path.
When I want to experiment with launching Eudora using
a brand new (usually empty) folder for "Data,"
I just "drag and drop" my desired folder onto Eudora.exe,
which has the same effect, without going to the trouble
of making a shortcut. For a permanent "Data" folder,
the shortcut tends to be more convenient, however :)

Another potentially "polluting" remnant from previous execution
might be a registry entry saving a previously bad command line,
perhaps from a previously used bad shortcut.
Any successful launch should repair that, I would think,
but it all goes to illustrate how one bad "credit report"
is hard to shake off :)
Is it working yet? Congratulations!

That did it! At least it now opens from the Desktop shortcut. Still no

I'm really starting to suspect that.

Man, you'd think I defaulted on my mortgage or something. :)

Now booting up from the desktop shortcut, thanks to the line I dropped
in after Ajo suggested it. Still no sign of the actual Data files,
though.

One more little anomaly:
The date in every version of Eudora I've ever used has been formatted
with slashes, e.g. 12/21/96. This install is showing up with dashes,
e.g: 12-21-96. Anybody know why that would be? The dreaded Eudora
Christmas Virus? ("On Slasher, on Dasher, on Chainsaw and Hacker...")
Date Display is Fixed: %1 %2 %4

Although it looks like you have a fix, I will share the fix I found to a problem similar (I think) to yours. I have a copy of Eudora 7 on my Win 7 64-bit computer, which came from my XP computer. When I would try to open it, it would go to a window with the message:
"The directory specified in the datafolder entry of the deudora.ini file: c:\program files\eudora doesn't exist or is not writable"
I went in to the .ini file and found the problem. The third line of of code reads
"DataFolder=C:\Program Files\Eudora"
The problem is that Eudora gets installed in win 7 64-bit in the Program Files (x86) folder. So I added the (x86) to the line of code to read:
"DataFolder=C:\Program Files (x86)\Eudora"
Now I don't get that annoying message and Eudora opens up right away. Too bad it took me so long to figure it out!
