SPF Temperror problem

  • Follow

I attempted to setup my company's SPF policy and I have used the
checker at verifier.port25.com (which is listed on the microsoft site
as a approved test program) and according to the tests, by SPF records
are correct and working.

In fact, if I send email to my gmail account, I can see that gmail is
able to correctly check the SPF record and it says it passes also.

Now the problem: For some reason, email that goes to my Hotmail
account doesn't pass the SPF check. I get the following error in the
header of the delivered email:

"X-SID-Result: TempError"

The email ends up going to my junk folder and also the mail shows up in
my Hotmail account as "Unknown Sender" since it didn't pass the SPF
check.

Any idea why this is happening?

Thanks,
Jason

In the absense of any specific details as to your domain or what your
SPF record looks like, I would say when your email hits the mail server
at "hotmail" that checks the spf record something goes wrong with name
resolution such that the SPF record is not retrieved in time and a the
message is taged with a tempError.

Microsoft do not use original SPF, but instead check address from
some mail headers.

"Traditional" (or origibnal) SPF check address given on MAIL FROM: -command.

These may be incombatible.

There are numerous things that MS looks at to either bounce mail or to
relegate it to "junk" status. I had this issue but managed to clear it up by
writing MS (will wonders never cease!)

Here is the email I (and link) I got from them as a response to my inquiry.

They instructed me to visit this page and send the answers to the email
listed at the bottom of the page.

http://advertising.msn.com/adproducts/Email_BulkDupe.asp

I have posted the info from that page below. Note that I am not a "bulk"
emaler. But still, they use the below criteria to accept/reject and "junk"
incoming mail. So, if you want your mail to be accepted by MS, you gotta
satisfy their requirements. Also note, I still had this problem after
creating a working (tested) SPF record. After answering these questions for
MS my mail to hotmail and msn.com quit being labeled as junk, regardless of
how high the user set his mail junk filter. Just FYI...

Ok, well I solved the issue and wanted to post my findings in case
anyone else ever has this issue.

First, to solve the microsoft issue, I had to create a working SPF
record (which I had already done, but was getting a TempError as stated
in the post).

Like Frankster mentioned above, all I had to do was contact microsoft
about the issue http://postmaster.hotmail.com and tell them my issue.
They responded within hours amazingly enough and told me they would fix
it. A couple of days later, my emails started saying: "X-SID-Result:
Pass" and they stopped going to bulk.

Also, in case anyone wants to know, you have to contact Yahoo via email
also if you want to get off their spam list.

Also 2, make sure your rDNS is setup correctly. Otherwise all your
mail to all major providers will goto bulk.

Hopefully this helps some people not have to go through the week of
crap I had to.

Take care, and thanks for everyones response.
