why connecting to 127.0.0.1 via relay?

  • Follow

This is Linux 2.4.21-15.ELsmp #1 SMP Thu Apr 22 00:18:24 EDT 2004 i686
i686 i386 GNU/Linux.

-----------------
[me@computing log]$ mail -n -v -s 'test from linux' me@my.edu
test again from linux
..
EOT
me@my.edu... Connecting to [127.0.0.1] via relay...
me@my.edu... Deferred: Connection refused by [127.0.0.1]
-----------------

It's not right. This machine should connect to another machine rather
than 127.0.0.1 via relay. Is there a way to change that? I think it
must be configured somewhere. But I don't know where.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bing

Do you use sendmail-8.12 as your MTA server ?

Sendmail-8.12 uses relaying to localhost:25 to avoid being installed as set
root id (as have been recomended for older versions).

You can find more detailed description at
http://www.sendmail.org/secure-install.html

See sendmail/SECURITY, it's the MSP that generates this error.
See also cf/README if you don't want to run a local daemon.
