Socket read error 10054

Using MercuryC relaying client, I get the following error : Socket
read error 10054 (at the end of the file). The message is relayed, so
what is the error ?

All advice most gratefully received, with thanks.

It looks like the remote SMTP host is either badly coinfigured,
broken, or just rude... My guess is the first somehow, as postfix is
normally pretty good.

From the log, it looks like this is happening:

You send ".<cr><lf>" which signifies the end of the posted message,
and the remote server is just shutting down the connection, whereas it
_should_ be sending you a "250" positive responce that it got the
message ok -- hence the first read error (the socket is gone, so you
can't read from it), then you try to QUIT the connection cleanly (as
its the polite thing to do), only to get a write error (as again, the
socket is gone).

That seems to be the gist of the problem, but not a solution -- that's
for the guy who looks after the other end to figure out ;-)
