configure sendmail to send error logs or cronjob logs

I need to have logs emailed to users within our network and thought I would
need to configure sendmail to use our existing mail server to get the job
done? Is that so? How would I go about having logs (error or cronjob)
emailed to specific users in our already configured domain space? Thanks.

Sendmail and Qpopper
Hi, I'm using Sendmail 8.12.10.7 and Qpopper 4.0.5-75 Workstations are using Windows XP with Outlook XP as the Mail Client... I have a network with about 20 - 30 users doing a regular pop3 check and every once and awhile I get a error such as this in the mail log... I/O error flushing output to client XXXXX at XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX [XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX]: Operation not permitted (1) [pop_send.c:689] I've read this may be a Outlook XP setting were the pop server is responding to fast but i'm not sure and would like to resolve this as i'm trying to sugest we move to a Sendmail setup instead of our Exchange Server 5.5 Here is what I use in my /etc/xinetd.d/qpopper for settings also : # # qpopper - pop3 mail daemon # service pop3 { disable = no socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = root server = /usr/sbin/popper server_args = -s -R -S log_type = FILE /var/log/qpopper flags = IPv4 } Thanks! PHP logs not working, and unable to send mail through sendmail via PHP
Hoping someone can help me out with this problem. First problem, is I am unable to view my php error log. In my php.ini I have my log in /var/www/logs/php_error_log. However, it has remained empty. Secondly, my sendmail works fine from command prompt. However, when trying to send mail through a php script (I have tried a couple), it says it is succesfull, but my mail logs show nothing going out. No error messages. Can someone take a look at my snippets below of my logging and my mail options and suggest some things for me to try please? Sending mail without sendmail or highly secure sendmail
Hello all, I am setting up a very secure Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server version 4 update 6 server. My sendmail version is 8.13.1. My mail server is a Windows 2003 Server with Exchange 2003 with its patches. They are both on the same subnet. DNS is on and it will resolve the mail server's name and IP. SSH, SCP, SFTP, and such tools are the only networkable protocols on. NFS if off, MOUNTD is off, PORTMAP is off, and such. Until just recently sendmail was off on the RHEL server as part of the hardening procedure. However part of the auditing requirements is for a mail message to go out to some admin if certain events occur such as "disk is full," "a panic occurred," "the system rebooted" etc. So I will perhaps cut sendmail on and mitigate the risk as best as possible. So, this sounds dumb, but can you send mail without sendmail. I think perhaps no, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Secondly does anyone have a harden .mc file from which they could share what they did? Of course you can fudge in phoney IP and names to protect your secured environment. Advice or insight do any of you have on securing sendmail is appreciated? I want to avoid such things as promiscuous relays, unqualified senders, etc etc. But if it must be ... it must be. :) Thanks George <george.e.sullivan@saic.com> wrote: > I am setting up a very secure Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server > version 4 update 6 server. Help with sendmail not placing messages in mail log file
System: Apple OS X 10.4.1 Type: client machine, not server version Sendmail: 8.13.4 I have had intermitent problems getting sendmail to log any information to the log file when it runs as a daemon. the problems began with OS X 10.4.0, but after a recent update to the OS and a security update, the problem is no longer intermittent. If I use the mail command at the command line, or when sendmail starts, I see logged messages in /var/log/mail.log, but after the daemons are running mail sent does not log. My question is twofold: 1) what is different about the way that sendmail sends log messages when invoked from a command 'mail -vs Test localuser' and when it is called by a mail client simply opening an smtp port and sending mail commands (ie where the daemon sm-mta would be called)? 2) is anyone else (OS X 10.4) seeing similar dropping of log entries? sendmail for only sending mail
hello, i want to be able to use sendmail to just send mail from a pipe... nothing more than that (meaning, no need for handling queue, etc.) so far, any linux i logged in to could do this by doing: # /usr/sbin/sendmail address@domain.com .... Type in message using headers etc .. and that's it, the message would be sent. however, in my fresh fedora installation, i cannot make sendmail terminate... it accepts input from std input, but "." does not send the message nor does ^D, nothing. i can't find in sendmail.cf a mention of "termination symbol". any ideas? (i thought it might be related to some terminate symbol, so i tried: /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -messagefile=msg.txt which should send message from a file, but still, i get std input waiting for input, and unable to terminate except for ^C.) i am using the fedora distribution by the way. thanks. From your statement of what the problem is it sounds like you might be trying to do this by parseing the mail box / mail dir / etc. The first things that comes to mine (especially sense you said Perl) is to use MIMEDefang (MD) as a Milter to have all messages pass through your perl script during the SMTP conversation. This will allow you to write your code in Perl which is what the filter portion of MD is written in. With MD you could easily pull From, To, Subject, Attachment Status from each message and log it where ever Perl can logs / wri...

Sendmail quit logging
Hi, Running Sendmail 8.12.6 on Redhat. Around 3 PM today, the maillog turned over, and suddenly there's no mail being logged at all. Here's part of what I have in /var/log: -rw------- 1 root root 0 Jul 4 15:05 maillog -rw------- 1 root root 68901912 Jul 2 04:02 maillog.1.gz Note that maillog is a zero byte length file. I thought the log had turned over, but when I look at the last part of maillog.1.gz I see this: [root@Raydeus-Dee log]# tail maillog.1 Jul 2 04:07:13 Raydeus-Dee sendmail[12217]: k6287A88012217: <rcrook@jellico.com>... Error In Mail Log
I'm getting a ton of these errors in my mail log each morning... May 10 02:55:48 vps sendmail[954]: i4A7tmW00954: SYSERR: putoutmsg (localhost): error on output channel sending "220 vps.XXXXX.net ESMTP Sendmail 8.11.6/8.11.6; Mon, 10 May 2004 02:55:48 -0500": Broken pipe These happen, a couple hundred at a time, when digests are sent out for a few mailing lists I host. I'm not sure, but I think it's a problem with flocking the input files perhaps??? Similarly, I get something like this on a random basis... Limiting Sendmail Logging?
Hi All, Another quick question - as our servers get busier and busier, they're generating a lot of chatty sendmail 'log info'. I know about the different logging 'levels' for sendmail (at the moment, we're still running the default, level 9). Is there any option, or can anyone think of a way we can get sendmail to 'not be so chatty' about delivery attempts... In an ideal world we'd love to only log: - Attempts that result in 'successful' delivery to remote site. - Attempts that result in 'permanent failure' from reomte site (and result in the email being returned). - Where it fails to accept an 'incoming' email from a client. This would free up no end of space, and resources - rather than at the moment logging hundreds, and hundreds of 'deferred' messages. Even attempts that result in no actual 'try' (because Persistant Host status info is 'current', and shows the last attempt to that MX 'deferred') is still logged :( Is there a way we can get anywhere near that goal? Thanks, JonB JonB wrote: > I know about the different logging 'levels' for sendmail (at the > moment, we're still running the default, level 9). > Is there any option, or can anyone think of a way we can get sendmail > to 'not be so chatty' about delivery attempts... In sendmail 8 you have - log levels - syslog priorities to control logging granularity. > Is there a way ...
