restrict mailing list senders to mailing list subscribers?
Hello I have a few mailings lists using text files containing the recipients of the list. I found http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/protected.html This seems to apply to all aliases. Is it possible to apply this setting to certain lists only based on part of the aliases file? If I understand you correctly (which it is entirely possible that I'm mis-understanding you) you are wanting to have a way to protect a subset of your local aliases. Correct? (Presuming yes.) I don't think there is a way for Sendmail to break the alias list in to multiple pieces. Even if you could, what would that gain you? Sendmail will still have to check each recipient if it is protected or not. Grant. . . . joe wrote: > Thanks Grant. That solve half my problem. I found > > http://www.sendmail...

mail routing based on sender domain using sendmail
Hi List, I've been researching the use of sendmail's 'mailertable' and 'MAIL_HUB' features and I've been led to the (perhaps premature) conclusion that it's not possible (or at least not easy) to route outgoing mail based on the sender's domain. Specifically, what our Microsoft Exchange administrator has asked me to do is this: IF mail is from "user@ourlocaldomain1.com" or "user@ourlocaldomain2.com" or "user@ourlocaldomain3.com" THEN route mail to 'somemessagelabsserver.com' ELSE route to 'ouroldmailgateway.com' >From what I can see, the "SMART HOST" can be used to send ALL mail to 'somemessagelabsserver.com' but there is no easy to do this conditionally as I've specified above. If anyone out there can tell me: a. Is this correct? b. And if so, why? I'd be most grateful! Using Sendmail/MailScanner to filter e-mail for Exchange.
Hello: Is it possible to use the MailerTable in sendmail to forward e-mails to an Exchange Server if the user doesn't have an account in Sendmail? If i use external ISP and relays all mails to that mailserver from sendmail, can the sender always be the same as autenticate
For example: We have an external mailserver "external.mail.server" We have an account to login to that server with "test" with passwd "test". We have an internal server ("internal.server") running sendmail which relays all internal mail to external.mail.server using "test" account. Problem with masquerading a senders' address using the /etc/mail/genericstable in sendmail 8.13.1
Hello, I have been struggling with trying to masquerade a senders' e-mail address using sendmail 8.13.1 on RedHat ES 4 (update 5). I am using the genericstable and my table looks like this: a02228 mmchugh@arrow.com a02228@localhost mmchugh@arrow.com a02228@usmlrh81.arrow.com mmchugh@arrow.com I also rebuilt the genericstable.db file via makemap hash /etc/mail/ genericstable < /etc/mail/genericstable and it worked no issue. I am trying to have any outbound mail coming from the unix user a02228 get re-written as being sent by mmchugh@arrow.com. l modified the sendmail.mc file with the following entries: MASQUERADE_AS(`arrow.com')dnl FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope')dnl FEATURE(`genericstable', `hash /etc/mail/genericstable')dnl MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(localhost)dnl MASQUERADE_DOMAIN(localhost.localdomain)dnl I then make make -C /etc/mail which re-built the sendmail.cf file. This worked and I also tried the m4 rebuild which did the same thing, but I had to manually move the newly built sendmail.cf file in. I guess redhat provides the wrapper to move the file in via make. I also restarted the sendmail services so the new configuration file is read in via services sendmail restart. This too worked without error. Sendmail.cf is updated with the following information: # Generics table (mapping outgoing addresses) Kgenerics hash /etc/mail/genericstable After I do all of this, it still doesn't work. I send an e-mail on the unix / linux...

Configuring sendmail for mailing lists
Hey all, I am configuring a mail server for a group that needs to send out mail to some of their large mailing lists (I'm verifying that they are not spam lists), because their current service does not seem to cut it for them. What I would like to do is give them an easy way to compose the message in their own clients, and then send them via Certificate authenticated SMTP to the groups that they want. I think that they easiest way for them to do this would be to have a single alias to which they can mail their message, and have the server mail out to the rest of the addresses. I want to avoid installing unnecessary software into my server, so I was wondering if there is a way of doing this with just Sendmail? The list is fairly static, so I don't need to have the ability to update the list quickly, I just need to be able to make it easy for the sender to mail things out. Does anyone have any recommendations? Sending mail without sendmail or highly secure sendmail
Hello all, I am setting up a very secure Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server version 4 update 6 server. My sendmail version is 8.13.1. My mail server is a Windows 2003 Server with Exchange 2003 with its patches. They are both on the same subnet. DNS is on and it will resolve the mail server's name and IP. SSH, SCP, SFTP, and such tools are the only networkable protocols on. NFS if off, MOUNTD is off, PORTMAP is off, and such. Until just recently sendmail was off on the RHEL server as part of the hardening procedure. However part of the auditing requirements is for a mail message to go out to some admin if certain events occur such as "disk is full," "a panic occurred," "the system rebooted" etc. So I will perhaps cut sendmail on and mitigate the risk as best as possible. So, this sounds dumb, but can you send mail without sendmail. I think perhaps no, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Secondly does anyone have a harden .mc file from which they could share what they did? Of course you can fudge in phoney IP and names to protect your secured environment. Advice or insight do any of you have on securing sendmail is appreciated? I want to avoid such things as promiscuous relays, unqualified senders, etc etc. But if it must be ... it must be. :) Thanks George <george.e.sullivan@saic.com> wrote: > I am setting up a very secure Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server > version 4 update 6 server. How to enable Mail Directory instead of Mail File in Sendmail/Procmail?
Hi, Again a newbie question. I am using Redhat Enterprise Server 4.0 with Sendmail. sendmail settings for larger mailing lists
I have been reading through the archives and am not sure what settings we should use in sendmail to work with larger majordomo lists being sent out through bulk_mailer (bulk_mailer is a program that sorts an email list into like domains for more efficient sending). For example, some lists have a few thousand addresses @aol, yahoo, hotmail, etc... From what I've read, there are 3 settings that can be adjusted to make these mailings go out smoothly and not get rejected by the destination or sendmail itself when sending: SMTP_MAILER_MAXMSGS SMTP_MAILER_MAXRCPTS MaxRecipientsPerMessage Which ones of the above list should be set, what are the recommended values, and does MaxRecipientsPerMessage being too low actually stop a mailing from going out (or any of the above settings)? With bulk_mailer putting like domains together, some envelopes seem to have hundreds or 1000's of addresses. We have tweaked MaxRecipientsPerMessage before, but I was never sure how best to optimize sendmail with bulk_mailer to handle both large and small lists, and large lists with large numbers of subscribers all from the same domain. sendmail simple mailing list problem
I have set up sendmail to use my ISP's outgoing mail server as a relay for mail from my server using the instructions I found here http://www.leo.org/~barner/freebsd/articles/mailsetup/article.html I use dyndns so that everyone can find myserver (as myserver.dyndns.net). I can send and receive mail on my server. I am also using a simple mailing list with about 15 subscribers that I set up using a mail alias (i.e. with the line 'mylist: : include:/usr/home/me/lists/mylist.txt') I can send mail to anyone on the list by sending mail to mylist@myserver.dyndns.net from any of my email accounts and from my account at my ISP (call it myaccount@myISP.com). Other users have also successfully sent mail to the list. However, a subset of the users also use my ISP and their mail to the list gets bounced by the ISP server. The error message in the bounced email is 553 You are not authorized to send mail as <otheruser@myisp.com> 501 5.6.0 Data format error So <myaccount@myisp.com> and <myotheraccount@mywork.com> can send mail to the list but not <otheruser@myisp.com>. using sendmail to send outoign mail only
Hi guys. I've set up a linux server (only running squid). I want mail from the root account on that machine to be sent to my email address. like RAID error notifications and stuff like that. I'v elooked everywhere, and everything seems to be working OK, but I can't send outgoing mail to external email accounts i have. the mail always appears to come from root@host.mydomain.com and not from root@mydomain.com if i use a smarthost that i allow relaying through, the return address appears ok, but in the message headers i still see root@host.mydomain.com. when using FEATURE(`relay_based_on_MX') the mail is sent to the appropriate mx, but isn't relayed from there. some relays say "DSN: Data format error" some say "DSN: User unknown" and some say it's ok, but the mail never gets to me. I looked at the logs, and i think it's related to the from: header. the mx for the external domains i'm sending mail to don't accept mail from the non-existant domain host.mydomain.com, and rightfully so, as there's no such domain. any ideas? what am i doing wrong? I don't need to recieve incoming mail at all, only to allow mail sent using "mail someone@somedomain.com" to go to the right direction. I can't use my ISP, cause it requires me to log into my pop account before sending outgoing mail. thanks. How do I configure Sendmail to reject all mail to domains not in /etc/mail/access file?
Hi. I've got a serious spam problem on one my server which is running Sendmail 8.13.1. I've been struggling with iptables, although efficient but not manageable in the long run. The problem really is bad scripts made by users on their webpages, but it is impossible for me to debug these. So this is why I'm looking for information on how to block all @domain.tld's while maintaining the ability to send mail to certain specified domains in the /etc/mail/access file. Thus far, I've also been adding domain.tld in local-host-names and relaying all @domain.tld to a local alias which is redirected to /dev/null. This solution is also unmanageable in the long run. Therefore I turn to you for guidance and information on how to find a solution for the spam problem on my server. Feedback and tips will be greatly appreciated :) Thx, /Timo_S On Fri, 11 Aug 2006 19:03:08 +0300 Timo_S wrote: > I've got a serious spam problem on one my server which is running > Sendmail 8.13.1. How preventing external mail from using internal 'mailing list'
Hello, I use /etc/mail/aliases to create 'manual' mailing list like all-enterprise, marketing-enterprise and specify some unix accounts. I would prevent external user (with different domain name) to use this local mailing list. For exemple : ok@domain.com can use all-entreprise@domain.com, but ko@else.com can't use all-enterprise.com. Is there any config to do this ? philippe.carbonnier wrote: > Hello, > > I use /etc/mail/aliases to create 'manual' mailing list like > all-enterprise, marketing-enterprise and specify some unix accounts. > I would prevent external user (with different domain name) to use this > local mailing list.
