Sendmail 8.12.10 queue file permissions 600

On a sendmail 8.12.10 list server, I'm seeing intermittent problems along the
lines of:

I don't see a final answer to that thread.

Basically, "sometimes," some qf files are created sympa.smmsp, mode 600, hence
the smmsp queue runner can't read them. My guess is that it happens more often
when messages are split into queue groups, but I haven't done exhaustive tests.

I do have some unusual options to split queue groups:

QUEUE_GROUP(`unet', `P=/var/spool/mqueue/unet, F=f, R=4, r=200, I=30s')dnl
QUEUE_GROUP(`brandeis', `P=/var/spool/mqueue/brandeis, F=f, r=50, R=5, I=1m')dnl
QUEUE_GROUP(`hotmail', `P=/var/spool/mqueue/hotmail, F=f, r=30, R=4, I=2m')dnl
QUEUE_GROUP(`yahoo', `P=/var/spool/mqueue/yahoo, F=f, r=30, R=4, I=2m')dnl
QUEUE_GROUP(`aol', `P=/var/spool/mqueue/aol, F=f, r=1, R=4, I=2m')dnl
QUEUE_GROUP(`other', `P=/var/spool/mqueue/other, F=f, r=10, R=8, I=30s')dnl
define(`ESMTP_MAILER_QGRP', `other')dnl
define(`confDELIVERY_MODE', `interactive')dnl
define(`LOCAL_SHELL_FLAGS', `u9')dnl

R$* $# mqueue

I notice that the 8.10.11 ReadMe starts with:

Use QueueFileMode when opening qf files. This error was a
regression in 8.12.10. Problem detected and diagnosed
Lech Szychowski of the Polish Power Grid Company.

Is that it, or is it something else?

Permissions are as in sendmail/SECURITY, and sendmail -d47.10 says:

main: e/ruid = 0/0 e/rgid = 51/0
main: RunAsUser = 0:0
readcf: RunAsUser = 51:51
drop_privileges(0): Real[UG]id=0:0, get[ug]id=0:0, gete[ug]id=0:51, RunAs[UG]id=51:51
drop_privileges: e/ruid = 51/51 e/rgid = 51/51
drop_privileges: RunAsUser = 51:51
drop_privileges: rval = 0

I expect that this will go away when I upgrade this box to 8.13.1+long strings patch,
which I should do anyway, but I'm curious to know for posterity if this relates to a
known/known fixed bug.

Sendmail 8.12.8/8.12.10 and aliases file
Hi, I've tested the aliases issue on Fedora/Sendmail 8.12.8 and 8.12.10 on few boxes (four) and I'm getting the same result - when sending email by using 'mail' it doesn't references to aliases file. When debugging I can see that aliases file is read. Any inputs or thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Magda All I've done is: 1. /etc/mail/sendmail.cf set smart relay #DS DSrelay:mailhost set domain name to AAA: #Dj$w.Foo.COM Dj$w.AAA.com 2 /etc/mail/submit.cf set smart relay #DS DSrelay:mailhost set MTA #D{MTAHost}[] D{MTAHost} mailhost set domain name #Dj$w.Foo.COM Dj$w.AAA.com 3. /etc/hosts set mailhost to notes server 10.xxx.xx.xx mailhost xxx.AAA.com 4. trun off sendmail: # chkconfig --list | grep on #chckonfig sendamil off #service sendmail stop 5. DNS verify /etc/resolv.conf file 6. test MTA functionality: # mail -v name@AAA.com test 7. set cron entry to run 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * /usr/lib/sendmail -q For some reason when I try to send email using MTA it doesn't read aliases file. For instance /etc/aliases file has entry: magda mhewryk@xxx.com 1). debug looks good, an alias is found # sendmail -bv -d27.2 magda magda (, magda) aliased to mhewryk@AAA.com self_reference(mhewryk@AAA.com) ... no self ref mhewryk@AAA.com... deliverable: mailer esmtp, host AAA.com., user mhewryk@AAA.com 2.) too many sendmail 8.12.11 sendmail and mail.local processes
I noticed over 7000 sendmail and mail.local processes that eventually exhausted the system's swap space. The system is a Solaris 8 box running sendmail 8.12.11. Also, sendmail.cf has MaxDaemonChildren=500 set. The problem occurred after the system received over 60,000 large email due to a misbehaved application. 1. Why would there be more than 500 sendmail processes? I noticed the parent process for most of the sendmail processes is 1 and mail.local were spawned by sendmail, of course. I have the default MaxQueueChildren value which is unlimited. Sendmail-8.12.10: Repeating Queue IDs?
I've noticed this odd condition on one of my mail servers (and it may also have ocurred on others which are similarly configured, but I haven't yet found any evidence), where it appears that a queue id sometimes gets re-used. The system is Linux-2.4.25 (Slackware-9.1), with a local installation of Sendmail-8.12.10 (I can post configuration details if required, of course). This system is strictly a mail relay host. No mail is expected to be received on the host itself. Relaying in Sendmail 8.12.10
Hi All, I am having problems with relaying mail from remote machines and wondered whether anyone here could point me in the right direction. I have found plenty of documentation about relaying but none of it works for me! I am running sendmail 8.12.10 on Redhat Fedora 1. Here is what I have done... 1. Added all the domains I want to relay to /etc/mail/relay-domains 3. Sendmail 8.12.10+Sun and genericstable
I have a problem with sendmail 8.12.10 on Solaris 9. Sendmail 8.12.10 Issues on Solaris 9
I've been struggling with this issue for several days now and am not making any progress, so any help would be greatly appreciated!! Here's the issue in a nutshell: running a sun server with solaris 9 and sendmail version 8.12.10+sun. No matter what cf file I use, sendmail does not appear to be using the one in /etc/mail. It only appears to use the one specified when I use the -C command. Even after starting the sendmail daemon (/etc/init.d/sendmail start), sendmail appears to not be using the newly compiled sendmail.cf file in /etc/mail. Frustrating!! Basically this server is just a management console for another application and I would like to only run sendmail so that scripts can call mail or mailx to send out email notifications, etc, when issues come up. It should not accept connections from anyone for mail delivery. We have some aliases defined in /etc/aliases that should be able to be used by the mail programs, but this does not seem to be working either unless I forcefully tell sendmail which sendmail.cf file to use using the -C command: /usr/lib/sendmail -C /etc/mail/sendmail.cf -v root </dev/null Any help would be greatly appreciated!! PS. If you need to see copies of the cf files I'm using, I will post those. Thanks in advance!! allmasquerade help in sendmail-8.12.10-1
On a Red Hat 3.2.3-20 machine running sendmail-8.12.10-1 I want to send everything to a smart host. No one reads mail on this machine. I started with the sendmail.mc file that came with the machine and defined a smart host in the beginning of the sendmail.mc file. Sendmail 8.12.10 on SLES9
Hi, We are trying out a third party mail solution (Scalix) which uses Sendmail in local mode for routing outgoing mail. I have an issue however with domain masquerading, whereby the line: From: "Andrew Hodgson" <andrew@domain.com> Gets changed to: From: "Andrew Hodgson" <andrew@machine.domain.com>. As this machine is not known externally, it won't work. As the vender have changed sendmail.cf (I assume this is the case as there is a backup sendmail.cf.1 file without vender specific binary paths in it), I can't use the macros. I have changed the DM line so it just says: DM Taking out all domain masquerading (or so I thought). However, rcsendmail restart works fine but messages coming through still have this issue. Are there any other lines I can change? Thanks. Andrew. -- Andrew Hodgson in Bromyard, Herefordshire, UK. My Email: use <andrew at hodgsonfamily dot org>. mail file keeps growing Sendmail 8.11
I have a problem that keeps reoccuring. Something happens to the /usr/spool/mail/user file that causes it to keep growing in size. When this happens the mail can not be pickup by MS Outlook and the only solution I have found is to delete the file and loose all the mail in the file. If I examine the file I see the exact same messages repeated various times and generally this is several thousand duplicates. It does seem that the reason that Outlook fails is that it does not wait long enough for the system to respond while it tries to process such a huge mail box. What causes it to grow I have not been able to determine but I suspect it is due to a large volume of spam and that once the file gets to certain size Outlook starts to time out and cause the problem. I have seen this happen on multiple machines and multiple mail accounts. Most are running SCO 5.0.5 or 5.0.6 and are using Outlook as the mail reader. For some reason this week has resulted with several differnet systems having this problem and some more then once. It is starting to be a real problem and since the only solution I have is to delete the mailbox I am concerned about what "real" mail is being lost. Sendmail-8.12.10 servers are basically overwhelmed ... :-(
I hope someone can provide suggestions and/or point me to suitable documentation. I manage three mail servers, which handle mail for the whole of the Concordia University community. One is a machine on which many users read their mail (via POP/IMAP/local shell) while the other two are strictly mail gateways (MX for all systems at the university, including many others where users receive and read mail). These all have similar Sendmail configurations, in that they use MimeDefang/SpamAssassin for spam detection and MimeDefang/Sophie/Sophos for virus detection. They have slightly different con...

sending e-mail to oneself (w/ sendmail 8.13.8+Sun/8.13.8)
Hello everyone, I hate to ask a basic question. But I already spent two weeks. I think I have suffered enough to post a question. I have been using Solaris 9 (SPARC) for years. My sendmail.mc with older sendmail worked okay for years. Now I updated my machine to Solaris 10, which comes with a newer version of sendmail (8.13.8). I tried my old sendmail.mc (with some tweaks) but it didn't work. So, I reverted the changes I made, one by one. Finally, I used the original sendmail.mc that comes with Solaris 10. It still didn't work. The problem I'm having is that I cannot send e-mails to myself. (Mail client == Mail host) I tried: # /usr/lib/sendmail -v myself </dev/null It hangs. The mail is stored in a spool because sendmail failed to deliver. I can see it by using 'mailq' command.
