sendmail - deferred messages - connection timed out with <domain.com>

hi,

im running sendmail 8.11.6 in a red hat box.

i have two ethernet cards:
10.1.1.6 - which communicates with our internal network
192.168.200.253 - which communicates with a 3Com Office Connect 812
DSL modem/router (which has a static/valid IP).

Sendmail succesfully receives mail from outside servers.
It also accepts mail from our internal network.

Problem is all outgoing mail never leaves the queue with a "Deferred -
connection timed out with <domain.com>".

i successfully telnet port 25 of mail servers, like mx3.hotmail.com,
so it
is not a firewall problem.

also, my isp has confirmed there is no blocking on any port.

in sendmail.cf i have DaemonPortOptions and ClientPortOptins set to
both addresses: 192.168.200.253 and 10.1.1.6.

Any ideas of what is going wrong ?

ty in advance.

ClientPortOptions can only be used once per address family (last setting
"wins" I believe), i.e. unless you're doing IPv6 or even more exotic
things, you can only have one - why are you using it at all? You're
probably telling sendmail to make outgoing connections with a source
address of 10.1.1.6, which won't work for obvious reasons. There doesn't
seem to be any reason for you to meddle with DaemonPortOptions either.
I.e. in summary, take out all DAEMON_OPTIONS and CLIENT_OPTIONS lines
from your .mc file and generate a new sendmail.cf from it - the defaults
will work.

Do not edit sendmail.cf - make changes in sendmail.mc only, compile it
and then try again.

I cannot see any need for DaemonPortOptions / ClientPortOptions in your
situation. Probably sendmail now tries to send out mail using the
10.1.1.6 interface which is the wrong one for outbound mail. Why did you
set these options anyway? Any problems if you just accept the default?

He probably changed it because by default on redhat, the sendmail daemon
is bound to the lo interface, which denies usage as a mail server for
the local network.

That's just the DaemonPortOptions, not the ClientPortOptions - the
setting of the latter is what is likely causing the OP's problem.

Thank you all.

Yes, the problem was ClientPortOptions. I removed 10.1.1.6 from there and
it worked.

Sendmail listens by default on local interface only.
I didnt know that it was ok to remove those options and just let
sendmail "find its own way" to get the job done.

Now i have another problem.

I send e-mail to Hotmail but it never gets to the mailbox.

Since i dont receive an error message I think hotmail is treating my
e-mails as junk mails.

Messages do get to other servers though.

any ideas ?

Can see www.<domain>.com but not <domain>.com after named setup
Good evening all, I am having a problem setting up named on RH9 linux box for an external domain. I have set up the various conf files (shown below) such that I can now hit www.fifthsparrow.com, news.fifthsparrow.com and so on; what I can *not* do, however, is hit fifthsparrow.com without the prefix. I think I have an error in my config files but I can't seem to find it and comparing them to the TrinityOS files shows no difference. [Help] Tren InterScan with sendmail <CR><LF>.<CR><LF> trouble
Hi . I'm using InterScan MSS and sendmail 8.13. According to the installation guide , I installed InterScan and our mail-server became to have two sendmail processes and one InterScan process. [sendmail-1]->[InterScan]->[sendmail-2] When, I sent a e-mail like this, ---------------------------------------------------------------- From: xxx <CR><LF> To: yyy <CR><LF> Subject: test <CR><LF> This is test mail <CR><LF> ..<CR><LF> <CR><LF> PS. <CR><LF> Zzzzzz. I'm sleepy <CR><LF> ---------------------------------------------------------------- a SMTP protocol error happened between [sendmail-1] and [InterScan] . The line ".<CR><LF>" was converted to "..<CR><LF>" by my Outlook, and sent to [sendmail-1]. [sendmail-1] processed this e-mail and finally sent it to [InterScan]. I watched communication data between [sendmail-1] and [InterScan] , then, found that the line ".<CR><LF>" was directly sent to [InterScan] from [sendmail-1]. Trendmicro said that it was a problem of sendmail, and I think so. Please tell me how to set up my sendmail to avoid this problem. Thanks ! More information. Sendmail and user accounts containing the domain --> "user@domain.com"

is www.mail.yahoo.com <> mail.yahoo.com
Hello I am a newbie, learning Domain Naming System(DNS). I want to know whether www.mail.yahoo.com is same as mail.yahoo.com. Since www is a subdomain of mail.yahoo.com it must be a different machine. Does it need to be on different IP address. I have seen cases where a subdomain such as www.site.com has same IP address as site.com. Is this normal. What kind of record is need to be created in DNS for this mapping. -- Winners dont do different things, they do things differently.
