Converting between projects in Sonar, Logic, ...

  • Follow

I've moved around trying different sequencers over the years, with
the result that I have projects in a number of different formats.

Are any tools available to convert projects from one sequencer to
another? Or, if not tools, at least a streamlined procedure for
doing the conversion manually.

My most pressing need right now is converting from Sonar to Logic,
because there's no Mac version of Sonar and I've pretty much stopped
using Windows. Consequently, I have about 100 projects that I did
in Sonar which I can't access at all anymore without firing up my
unmaintained Windows machine.

A possible work around would be if someone knows of an emulator
(e.g. Parallels, ...) that is capable of running Sonar under Mac.

Any help appreciated.

My band members, some of whom have very pro level studios, do a lot of
conversion.

The most foolproof way I have found is as follows:

1. Make a sound across all files that has a very sharp attack and a long
tail such as a gunshot or even a clap on reverb.

2. Export them all as .wav or some non lossy format.

3. Load em in the new one and line up the attacks at the beginning. Zoom
this and get down to sample level and make sure the very first sample in
each track is lined up.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure I understand. My projects generally have both
midi tracks and audio tracks. If it were only midi tracks, there would
be no problem. I'd just export to midi and import the midi into Logic.
The problem is getting the audio tracks in, synced up correctly and
with the right levels and all. The audio tracks generally have
multiple clips that start in lots of different places. If I save all of
these clips as wave files, I then have to import them into Logic and
move them to the right places and with the right mixing.

Are you saying that I should add the gunshot sound at some point before
before the music starts as a way to synchronize the wave files?

It seems like someone should be able to automate this process. If
someone has reverse engineered the file formats for Sonar and Logic
files, it seems like it would be tractable to create a program that
would do a quick and dirty conversion.
