mapping midi to other ports ?

  • Follow

does anyone know whether you can map midi in/out to another computer port
(maybe using other hardware) ? I have a laptop, which I want to use as a
generic Midi sequencer to trigger a basic hardware synth setup.
Unfortunately, the laptop does not have a joystick port, just usb lpt
video and network... Any help much appreciated,

M-Audio, Edirol and others make USB midi interfaces. Your default
Midi playback port is currently probably the Microsoft Synth built
into Windows. It's easy to change this in Control Panel/Sounds when
another port becomes available. If you're using a sequencer program,
all but the most basic will detect all available midi ports and allow
you to choose between them - even on a track-by-track basis. You may
find a multiple-port interface useful, if you have several
multi-timbral external midi devices.
