Midi Files
I'm wondering if anyone has explored creating custom ringtones for a
Blackberry. Any suggestions for converting .wavs or .mp3s to midi
files?

Maybe, but I don't know.

The canonical answer is to learn enough about music to be able to listen
to the mave/MP3 files, figure them out, and be able to perform them. To
date, there is no computational method that works well enough to be useful.

I have an LG VX-7000, and believe it or not, there is a way to convert
a mp3 to midi to make a ringtone for it.
Know what it is? (this is awesome)
You rename the file.
I'm serious. If you take inagaddadavida.mp3 and change the name to
inagaddavida.mid, you can upload it to the phone and it works great.
Obviously the VX7k can play mp3 files; it just does so in a
semi-retarded manner. But maybe your blackberry has a similar mental
problem/undocumented feature. There are a few limitations; the song
can't be longer than a minute or so, and the bitrate has to be
sufficiently low that the file fits in the phone's dinky memory.
If it can't do mp3's, and you're trying to find anything even remotely
poopular, it's been my experience that there are at least 30 midi
renditions of every song ever written floating around on the web;
that's why (my theory at least) noone has ever bothered to write
software to do it.

I'll test it out with my phone. Thanks for the tip.
Do you know of any way to associate specific ringtones with individual
callers?
I'll let you know what else I discover.
