I want to play midi through a sequencer via a sound card. I'm looking
at a yamaha psr85 to do this. Can I just plug and go or do I need
special software from yamaha designed for used with the particular
keyboard?
Thanks in advance,
Geo.

No, you don't need Yamaha-specific software. A major reason that
communications protocols such as MIDI exist is to provide manufacturer-
independant communications.
You may, however, find that some sequences don't produce desired results,
typically because they were written with sound-to-channel assignemnts
other than you may have loaded on your PSR85. This is addressed by the
General MIDI standard, but not all sequences and synthesizers are GM
compliant.
