Recording MIDI from Drum Machine through M-Audio Interface

  • Follow

Hello,

I am using Cubaase SX in order to multitrack a mixture of MIDI and
Audio Samples. I am using a USB M-Audio Ozone interface which works
fine.

I start with a drum beat from my Alesis SR-16. I am not good at
creating my own drum beats, so I am happy with using the preset drum
beats from the Alesis.

Unfortunately, if I record a drum beat as an Audio Track, none of my
MIDI tracks I record later (using Absynth 2.0) synchronize to that beat
(since it's not MIDI). Although they sound fine while I monitor and
record a MIDI track, when I play it back, the MIDI gets off sync with
the drum beat. I have isolated the problem as related to the global
BPM set in Cubasae, and having nothing to do with latency, etc.

So, someone told me I need to read the MIDI information from the drum
machine into Cubase, and then when I master the track, it will play the
info back through the Drum machine and be captured as audio. This way
all my MIDI will be synchonized.

I can not figure out how to read in the MIDI information from the
Alesis preprogrammed Drum beats into Cubase through the Ozone. I know
I could create my own drum beats in Cubase to be sent to the Drum
Machine, but I'm not good at that part of composition yet.

Since the Ozone is my only MIDI interface, I don't have other options.
Will the Ozone support IN or THRU MIDI recording? How can I get the
Alesis MIDI information into my computer through the Ozone? Is this
even possible? The Ozone only appears to have OUT options.

Could I buy an internal PCI MIDI interface to use?
Thanks in advance,

BC
