Hey - wait a few months and it'll be on their site free of charge.  The

Granted SOS is pretty pricey.  But their stroies are very informative and 
detailed. What I like about them is that they go beyond articles on what you 
"can" do, and get into "why" you might want to do something in a specific 
way.  They always have columns of tips for Cubase, Reason, PCs, Macs etc. 
I'd give it a VERY high bang for the buck rating.  I picked up a discounted 
subscription through audiomidi.com (not currently offered), which lessened 
the pain - so keep an eye open for deals.

Someone else posted that you could see it later on their web site, but I 
don't think that is true.  While the current and past issues are posted, you 
need to have an account to read them.  And you get the acount with a 
subscription.

I posted that.  No offence mate but....check your facts, maybe.  You need
the account to read articles which appeared in the magazine in the last six
months or so. (I think as far back as October's edition).  Anything before
that is free.  It's a good deal and anyone who rips them off is a bit low,
in my opinion.

After educating myself more about "Sound on Sound", I agree that it's
worth the money. Having never heard of *any* magazine more expensive
than about $6, and having never heard of SoS until Rodger Raino's very
helpful reply three days ago, I was indeed skeptical. However, it
seems far more informative than Electronic Musician or Keyboard (both
of which I receive free) for those of us setting up a PC-based home
recording studio.

I appreciate the helpful replies, and shall be subscribing to Sound on
Sound. Any suggestions as to how to stay informed about possible
discount subscription offers, such as audioMIDI.com's now-expired
offer?

I haven't read it, but I would guess that you partition the disk with music 
files on one side and system files on another. It's pretty easy to do on a 
clean system. 

I stand corrected.  Guess I never tried to access articles older than 6 
months, I think I've only seen the "esub" button next to articles.
I think it is great they only restrict the access while the stories are 
recent, but then let everyone look at their archive.

As much as I hate to admit it, it was some spam from audiomidi that cought 
my eye (well it really isn't spam if you want to reade it, but...).  I'd 
gotten a free copy somewhere and was impressed.  Then I looked at the full 
price subscription rate and though "not now".  Shortly after that the 
audiomidi off came to my inbox, and it was only cheap by comparison (still 
way more than EM etc.).  So for me it was pretty much dumb luck in the 
timing.  Audiomidi ran the offfer for a couple of months - maybe they can 
still get that rate for you if you ask.  I just checke and it was $39.

I think it's also the case that the six month cut-off point allows free
access to articles which are still very much relevant.  There's so much good
stuff in that archive that I really do think it would be mean to cast SOS as
anything other than very helpful.

Their forum is excellent as well - I think you might have to be a subscriber
to ask questions but you can learn a LOT from browsing through other
people's questions and  the well informed answers.

I suppose it is quite an expensive buy - although only about the same as a
pack of cigarettes in high tax U.K. - but their articles do have a lot of
meat to them and I constantly find myself referring back to editions years
after they first appeared.  Well worth the subscription if you can run to
it, I'd say.
