Syncing multiple MIDI Devices and Live MIDI Drum Looping

  • Follow

I have been considering a number of different setups for a one-man-band act
and I wanted to explore an option of using Roland Handsonic 10, which seemed
interesting to me because of its excellent interface/pads --it is most
instrument-like of all compact triggers I have seen --, and because of its
excellent sound pallete, and using BOSS RC-50 for guitar/bass looping.

What I don't know is what device would be a suitable sequencer (one that
would allow uninterrupted, "on the fly", construction of loops), and how
this sequencer could be setup to be able to record and trigger sequences
from Handsonic while at the same behaving as a master MIDI clock for Boss
RC-50.

One option that was suggested to me in one of the earlier postings was to
use an inexpensive sequencer such as Alesis SR-16, but I am not sure what
kind of MIDI interface would one use to connect Alesis to Handsonic 10 and
record and play data from Handsonic, while having Alesis SR-16 connected to
Boss RC-50, where Alesis SR-16 would provide master MIDI clock information.

In other words, I need to interconnect three MIDI devices and use them for
the following functions while having them all synced

1) Handsonic 10 (MIDI triggering MIDI OUT Alesis SR-16 records
sequence

2) Handsonic 10 (Sound generator) MIDI IN Alesis SR -16 plays
recorded sequence back and HAndsonic generates sound

3) Alesis SR-16 MIDI Master clock info Boss RC-50

Alesis SR-16 sends master MIDI Clock information.

Could anyone recommend a MIDI interface that would be suitable for such
setup?

I would appreciate recommendations on suitable sequencers for live,
uninterrupted, MIDI drum looping, where one can easily shift from recording
to playing mode, without stopping performance.

Thanks,

Rale

The obvious answer to me is a laptop computer running Ableton Live which
is the only sequencer I know of capable of dealing with loops on the
fly.

Incidentally, the Alesis SR-16 is a drum machine, not a full blown
sequencer, and as far as I'm aware is incapable of recording incoming
MIDI data.

It's certainly not capable of recording loops on the fly as you have to
deal with the song position pointer stuff manually, although it is
possible to record short patterns in that way.

Having said that, I'm not in possession of a complete MIDI
implementation chart for it - Alesis seem to be incredibly bad at
providing decent MIDI documentation for their modules!

Hope this helps :)
Michael

Long story short, possibly the half-rack MOTU MicroLite. Its cheap,
runs Mac or PC and carries up to 80 MIDI channels. 5 ins, 5 outs.

The conventional wisdom these days is leaning towards Ableton Live,
but Tracktion is also good and far cheaper. Reason would be good, but
its locked into its own internal synths. You're looking at a ton of MIDI
spaghetti and a laptop to do that live, so consider an effects box with
a long delay/sample memory, including more guitar-focused items like
Boomerang. It depends on your playing style and exactly how you want to
use the recording aspect. Maybe a looper with 2 or 3 minutes in it would
make a difference in how you structure things.
