TCP/IP interface for hi-fi?

  • Follow

Sorry this isnt quite a MIDI question but its about music and
computers.

I have a wireless network in my house. My PC is upstairs and my MP3
collection is on it. My hifi is downstairs in the lounge. I would
like a small, cheap, wireless TCP/IP gadget with a pair of phono outs,
which will read streaming audio from my PC, convert it to analog out,
and plug into the hifi. Does such a gadget exist? Or is it cheaper
to get a dedicated PC or laptop downstairs to do this?

The folks at www.slimpc3.com do such a device. I think they call it
the squeezebox. Their software is open source as well...

I think Apple has a device that does this. Its called Airport Express +
Airtunes. http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/airtunes.html

AFAIK It works with PCs as well as Macs and is not expensive.

Thanks guys -- I am increasingly amazed bythe fact that every time I
think of a cool product idea, someone on the internet has already
built it!

The apple one looks like its only for iTunes; the squeezebox is moroe
general. I also found a netgear version: Netgear MP101 Media Player

I use a pair of wireless earphones. They work for about 150 feet, and
its the easy way to set up.

However, do you have a cd burner? Some of the new cd and vcrs combo
units can play the mp3 format, and you can get 10 hours or more of mp3
on one cd. It would be easy to burn a cd worth of mp3s that you just
keep at your hi-fi.
Patch the audio out of the cd player into y adapters on the inputs to
your hi-fi, and you can play that cd mp3 through your hi-fi.

There are also portable mp3 cd players at most of the stores that sell
cd players, and do not cost very much.
