I downloaded the S-YXG50 Soft Synth V4 for Windows 2000/XP. I have now
installed the trial version on a Win2000 and a WinXP machine.
Installation is perfect - but it is impossible to playback midi-files
on any of the machines. If I play a midi-file in Windows Media Player,
no sound comes out. If I play it in XGPlayer, I get the error box
(translated from Danish): "This function is not supported. Use
Settings to find out which functions and messages, the driver
supports." When I click OK on the dialog box, I get a Setup-popup with
the headline "MIDI Output Port" where I can select between "YAMAHA XG
SoftSynthesizer" and "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth". If I select
Yamaha, I get the same error again..
Is there anything I can do?
Help is much appreciated!
Regards,
Thomas

I'm guessing it is a sound card driver issue -- what sound card do
you have, does it have WDM drivers, does it support the SYXG sampling
rate?

Leo,
I tried that too (it's actually for a karaoke night on Friday!) - it
displays the exact same error...

Yes, that would be my guess too - although I know nothing about WDM
etc., I'm pretty sure the sound cards should be supported. The two
computers have Soundblaster 16 and a SigmaTel onboard audio. Now I
tried it on a third Win2000 (the error: "Undefined external error")
with AC97 chipset. I'm beginning to think it has something specific to
do with Danish Windows versions - since I haven't been able to find
anyone else haveing the problems!
Also, it works perfectly well in Win98...

That could make sense -- a file name issue or something like that?
>Also, it works perfectly well in Win98...
Which suggests an OS problem. Still could be drivers, but the SB16
*is* supported by Microsoft's own driver set, so I doubt it.

Did you install the trial version. If so, it times out in late 2002.
Set your system date back to 2001 and restart the midi application.
I am very pleased with the audio quality of the Yamaha XG Synthesizer.
Unfortunately I can't seem to find a way to buy a license to unlock the
trial.
