Yamaha UX16 to Win XP interface problem
A few months ago I installed a Yamaha UX16 USB/Midi interface between
by WIn XP notebook and a Yamaha P120 keyboard. Everything went
smoothly at that time. I didn't use it for a few months and the other
day, tried to reconnect the computer to the keyboard. While trying to
get the sound to come from the Yamaha piano, I misconfigured something
and screwed things up completely. Now when I connect the UX16, the
found hardware wizard pops up and tries unsuccessfully to install a
driver. This isn't good because the driver was installed at one time!
I have tried to completely uninstall the Yamaha midi interface and
reinstall it from the supplied CD. Unfortunately, it won't complete
the process. The supplied Wizard always stops with an error saying
that "The file cannot be found" but doesn't say which file. I am the
Administrator on the computer, I've deleted all instances of the Yamaha
MIDI interface from Device Manager, deleted Yamaha files suggested at
other discussion groups to force reinstallation from CD, scrubbed the
registry, tried new drivers from the Yamaha site, and even looked into
various .inf files to see what might be the matter. Bottom line - the
driver won't install and the UX16 just sits there and the lights won't
turn on let alone getting any communication to/from the keyboard.
I believe the Wizrd copies xgusb.cpl and ymidusb.sys but may be hanging
on xgusb.inf called for in another .inf but not available on the disk
nor available from Yamaha or the web in general.
Suggestions, including chucking the UX16 and replacing it with a
similar product from another vendor, welcomed. I am far from a power
musician. I just want to play piano midi files through my digital
keyboard.

Try "Help and Support" and go back to the previous installation. If it
doesnt work, go back to the latest installation.

Thank you, this worked perfectly. I don't know what Help and Support
is but I did a System Restore through the XP Administrator Tools (which
is what I think you were suggesting). XP wanted to reinstall the
driver but for whatever reason, it completed the installation without
incident this time. I guess some hidden registry entry got
corrupted...
