with Apple. The money passage from Bray:"
"The iPhone vision of the mobile Internet's future omits controversy, sex,

LOL! Freedom huh?
As long as the cell providers are involved in it, that is not going to
happen.

Why don't you email Tim Bray and inform him of your opinion? Maybe he'll
change his mind and become an iOS developer?

He's just the co-inventor of XML. Obviously our resident Appholes know
more than him or any industry expert.

Is it just me, or does the lock-down carrier/closed garden paradigm
have a suspiciously familiar 'ring' to it - kind of like Glen Beck has
been constantly talking about elitist powermongering progressives that
keep treating the rest of society as cattle to be herded or 'nudged'?
one example: Cloud computing(or Google's vision of it)- "we want to
store the whole world's data, but trust us cuz our motto is 'do no evil'."
Sounds suspiciously familiar to: "Hello, I'm from the government, and
I'm here to help you." Just like they 'helped us' with DMCA...
Sometimes I feel iPhones & iPads should be classed as 'iHerd' devices...

Well, I'm saying that beyond the desktop and server market, the 'open'
stuff isn't all that 'open'.

Why bother, he's got a dog in the hunt at Google. As long as they can
convince enough that it is 'open', they'll make a ton 'o bucks.

Possibly, but then the Android devices don't seem a hell of a lot better
in that respect, so what're ya gonna call them? :)

Like I've said before, Stargate SG-1 is a perfect metaphor:
Android devices are a bunch of also-ran 'replicators', while
Apple/Jobs are the equivelent of Stargate SG-1's 'Auri', CSMA fanbois
being the Auri's 'Pryors', and iOS being 'Origen'. :)

Oh, and Microsoft still remains to be G'uald, or in case one prefers a
Star Trek metaphor, the 'Borg'.
Of course, Google folks are actually "V"_istors or "Cylons" - take
your pick.

My principles don't stand in the way of me using Android devices and the

OK. You said hello to you.
Tell you what, if you tell us that you've bought fewer than a dozen
Apple products (a computer and monitor counts as two) in the last,
say, 6 years, I'll withdraw my charge.

Your "counter" to claims is that someone buys products... you have nothing
even remotely related to the topic to use to back your views.

Typical troll stupidity.
His expertise in XML doesn't give him credibility in business.

I might not go down the pub and enjoy a few drinks with Google at the
weekend but they do provide a mobile OS and lots of software that I find
useful. Apple, on the other hand, has yet to provide anything of use to me.

Apple has got a "dog in the hunt too." So why don't you disregard

Who's "they?"
Tim Bray joined Android because he feels it's open. He didn't start there
and decide to convince people to go along with him.

That would be sad if it were actually true.
However, it is not.
Any advantage (real or advantage) that the iPhone has at this point
is very much transitory. Some parts of the iPhone are really quite crappy.
For one, I wish I could run an alternate for the built in SMS app. It's not
really very accomodating for people that use their phone for work.

Are you sure about that last part? Plenty of Apple fans who don't own an

The same goes for the iFad. The cheapest, crappiest netbook laden with
crippleware like Windows Starter Edition can at least multitask and view
pages with Flash content, whereas the iFad has to have an application
for every site that has Flash and multitasks like a 8086 running Windows
1.0.

Who said it did? The subject is freedom and choice.

An interesting litmus test ... of sorts.
It does raise a few question on how to really count. First, should
this be done on a strictly "Per Person" basis? Or be pro-rated to aid
in addressing common situations such as there being a shared home
machine? Second, for instances where there's required to be a
separation between personal hardware vs. business hardware, should
this be accounted for within the counting method, and if so, how?
For example, consider a household of 2 that has separation required,
but just buys a new laptop (for both work & home) every three
years.
If we simply sum them all up, then we get "8 devices in 6 years",
which clearly exceeds this 'fanboi' tag by a wide margin ... but I
find it hard to believe that this is the underlying intent of this
suggested metric.
My impression is that you're looking for the individual person who has
a laptop + iPad + iPhone + iPod + older laptop + iMac + aTV + older
iPhone + older iPod + ... all bought in just a few years.
While there's some merit to looking at this from a 'brand loyalty'
perspective, greater insight into how many of these devices (ALL
BRANDS) the typical person buys over 6 years is needed before picking
a value for 'fanboi-ism' claims.
To illustrate, the metric's proposer can post for us all to see how
many devices their household has purchased in the last 6 years in each
of these categories:
- Personal Computers Desktop (Home + Work)
- Laptops/Notebooks (Home + Work)
- Netbooks/Tablets (Home + Work*)
- MP3 Players (Home + Work*)
- Cellular Phones (Home + Work)
- TV Entertainment devices (Home + Work*)
* - unlikely, but nevertheless
Suffice to say that if we assume the usual suspects, it wouldn't be
too terribly hard to have 5-9 devices that get replaced twice in 6
years, thereby yielding roughly 10-20 items that qualify for this
criteria, and we can see this from the perspective that brand name
loyalty can be as low as (6/20)=3D30%, yet still be high enough bust the
suggested limit, whereas it can just as easily have been as high as
(5/10)=3D50% and *not* bust the same suggested limit.
Overall, I think that the intent here is to illustrate (via a metric)
that said 'fanboi' stereotype has a high degree of brand-name loyalty
*plus* they're buying an above average number of items. However, for
that sort of hypothesis, this n=3D6 criteria is inappropriate because it
is too highly simplistic.

You are an Apple fanboi. Is that clear-enough for you?
My charge that you are an Apple fanboi stands, unless you tell us that
you've bought fewer than a dozen Apple products (a computer and
monitor counts as two) in the last 6 years.
I'm predicting nothing but more evasion (or thread-slinking) from you.

What he has or had not purchased has no bearing on his argument. This is a
non-issue you are pushing because you have no actual argument against his.

As opposed to broad brush strokes from you?

Apparently, to Chrisv's personally defined 'metric'. Unfortunately
for Chrisv, until Sandman makes a clear declaration for how many Apple
products he's bought over the past 6 years, Sandman isn't playing his
little game.

Chrisv already has, by his non-response to my post from last night
which pointed out the shortcomings of his simple little "litmus test".
As I mentioned, Chrisv needs to lead by example by posting for us all
to see how many devices his household has purchased in the last 6
years in each of these Apple-relevant categories:
- Personal Computers Desktop (Home + Work)
- Laptops/Notebooks (Home + Work)
- Netbooks/Tablets (Home + Work*)
- MP3 Players (Home + Work*)
- Cellular Phones (Home + Work)
- TV Entertainment devices (Home + Work*)
In most basic form, if one has bought Apple products in more than one
of these categories, Chrisv's "test" is pretty much self-fulfilling in
terms of his "fanboy" asseration because Chrisv set his value so
low.
For fun, try applying Chrisv's identical counting criteria to a
notional lable of "Linux Freak". While we do so, let's not neglect
to also include the other "Apple Qualifying" items that were initially
overlooked and not on the above product category list, specifically:
- Wireless Routers (Apple Airport)
- NAS (Apple Time Capsule).
Pray tell...what do we do if someone turns out to be both an "Apple
Fanboi" and a "Linux Freak" too? :-)

Hmmm, bough a 19 inch TV and a DVD player. And a VCR/DVD combo that died.

If any further confirmation is wanted, Alan/Edwin/KDT was kind enough to
provide it:

Prove it, Edwin. What you quoted as proof says his servers are not used

No. It says that his business had game servers and xserves.
He gets three xserves and declares "But now the circle is complete. Now
my business is all-Mac."
Why would he have said that if the xserves weren't what made his
business "all-Mac", Edwin?

Not unless you show me some form of credentials that make you suited
as an arbiter of these matters. After all, you mentioned "charge", as
if you are able to deal such out to any perceived offender and it
would be taken seriously.
> My charge that you are an Apple fanboi stands, unless you tell us that

As far as I am aware, since you have failed to provide any
substantiation to the contrary, your "charge" amounts to hot air.
> I'm predicting nothing but more evasion (or thread-slinking) from you.
I'm not sure what specifically I could be evading here. Your "charge"?
In what way would I be evading this? And why? Why does it mean to me,
what is it supposed to mean to me - for you? What do you think this
charge entails?
Let's use a hypothetical case here. Say, if I tell you that I think
you're an ignorant usenet troll with pretty much no imagination and no
real ambition - what would that "charge" mean to you? Would you feel
compelled to prove it false by some criteria set by me?

He said the servers aren't part of the business, he earns no money on them,
Edwin.

No. He said his game servers weren't part of his business. He never said
his game servers were the xserves.

As per Chrisv's "NOYB" guidance for disregarding work machines, plus
the 6 year time window, this would be zero, because my current
personal desktop (G5 PowerMac) dates from 2003.

One iPad; is effectively replacing the 12" G4.

There's two iPods in the house, but only mine dates is sufficiently
recent vintage (2007 2G nano). Both also have had noise-cancellation
headsets for years ... and both NC headsets are very, very near their
end-of-life (one has intermittent electronics; the other's foam covers
are disintegrating). The Mrs says not to replace her's (2004 mini)
because she'll use the iPad instead.

Two personal (his/hers). Both are older Motorola's (pre-2005 again).

Wasn't intending this to include TV sets, since Apple doesn't make any
of these. Was thinking more along the lines of Apple TV & similar, as
well as Wii, etc. Here, I have two old used compact macs (Cube &
mini) that I picked up last summer for $200 with the intent to apply
to a home entertainment project, which has since stalled (Ethernet
cabling issue) and they're both sitting in a box collecting dust.
While I've disclosed their existence, I'm also inclined to disregard,
particularly since I hadn't even decided what OS & Software to run on
them.
In the subsequently added categories:
2005 - Wifi Router (linux)
2009 - Ethernet NAS (linux)
2010 - "N" Wifi Router (linux)
Summing can be done a couple of different ways:
Items that are/were "in use" [TBD=3Dstagnant hobby project] over 6 year
period:
1+1+1+2+2+[TBD]+3 =3D 10 items [or 12 items, if stagnant hobby is
included].
Same, identifying which are Apple brand hardware and 2005 or later, in
use:
0+1+1+(0+1)+0+[0]+0 =3D 4 items.
4 of 10 items being used is 40% ... over a 6 year lifecycle period.
Pragmatically, the old 2005 12" G4 is EOL and the 2003 desktop is
close to EOL too; I'll probably be replacing the desktop quite soon
and probably either get a new laptop, and/or pick up a second iPad.
While this does bump up the numbers, do also keep in mind that the
other factor is that these quantities are the sum being used for two
adults, not just one.

Was not sure what was meant here... figured my purchases there might not
count.

Have none of those... though somewhere my wife has a Playstation 1 buried
away.

I have purchases two or three routers in the last few years. None from
Apple (though their routers are excellent, they are a bit more expensive
than I could justify for the added benefits).

Understandable. The issue is that Chrisv's "anything Apple" purchase
criteria could include the AppleTV, so when we broaden this out to
other brands, we have to consider comparable products. The same was
also true here:

Again, these are examples of where an "Apple Nose Count" becomes
overly simplistic.
For example, I've been deliberating the merits of getting an Airport
Extreme to effectively replace two devices (WiFi + NAS) and from this
perspective, I'm not really sure that it incurs any real "Brand Name"
premium...perhaps someone can look at the prices in this fashion and
offer a comment (I don't really have any real need to look into it
until one or both of these existing WiFi routers die). And if that
last statement sounds a bit odd, it is because the "N" listed above is
actually not for daily home use: one of our annual vacations is a
house rental and we take the "N" with us to upgrade its network from
wired to wireless for our own convenience for the weeks while we're
there...it is a lot simpler & easier to simply drop the bucks to buy a
second one for such transient applications than to be hassled with
disrupting the one that's in situ. Even so, I'm tempted to replace it
with an Airport Express because the Express is a much smaller package,
and this item is traveling in carry-on baggage.

Last I checked, the Airport base stations were still pretty expensive, but
it has literally been years since I have done any comparisons... back when
they were round and not squared.

Makes sense.

Again, makes complete sense. I might take a wireless router with me when I
go visiting family later this year.

What's to argue with? You made a claim, all your claims are always
100% wrong. It's not like people here need any "argument" to display
your ignorance about English or computers. You may now proclaim
victory:

because it was you who started building web pages about people before
Sandman created the trolling criteria section of his site that you
essentially begged him for. I say "whining weasel" because the term
defines you better than any other.

I can find irrelevant links as well. So? This does not change the fact
that Sandman had *hundreds* of pages that reference his lies and trolling.
For him to say this is his job is just insane, unless other trolls are
paying him to house their data.... which might be the case. Heck, HPT
certainly uses the list of obsessively gathered and forged quotes. Carroll
uses other pages. Maybe that is how Sandman earns his living.

No - Carroll just laughs like that because he thinks it bugs me. Look at
his sock "Big Crotch" for dozens of examples.
It sounds as if you thought his site being dynamic was not understood by...
someone. Maybe you thought I did not get it? In any case, it is not
relevant.
Of course, you will claim it is... but then never say why. The fact is, for
Sandman to say he makes money off his sites filled with trolling and lying
is pretty sad - and points to the idea that Steve and HPT and others pay him
to post their lies. They have made it clear they work together, but I never
knew they *paid* him to post that BS. No wonder he keeps it there - as
humiliating as it is for him and as much as it is going against his word to
not lie or troll, he feels obligated (and might even have contractual
obligations). How pathetic.

He didn't post anything like that in what you quoted. It said his business
is on a Linux Server, dunce.
"I replaced it some years later with a cheap
Athlon Linux server and when I lost the job and started my own company
I went with the linux solution. Being a Mac guy, this has always been
a "thing" for me. How I rather would have a Mac server. The linux
server (dual 3.6Ghz Xeon (last-gen)) has served me well (not a single
crash, ever) though. "
He says he would rather have a Mac server, but the Linux server has served
him well.

He said his Mac servers are game servers, and his business server is a Linux
server, Edwin.
