[News] Ingres chief Looks at GNU/Linux and Openbravo Embraces Ubuntu Linux

Hash: SHA1

Q&A: Ingres chief executive Roger Burkhardt

,----[ Quote ]
| We looked at Linux and we could customise it to meet our needs. We could also
| get good support from vendors. The good news is that, when you do research
| for open source, you can easily try it out and get very good information
| about the product from the community behind it. All the feedback from the
| users is out in the community for all to see, so you never have to rely on a
| sales person who is just going to tell you what you want to hear. You can
| actually interact with other users in the community, and validate what is
| really there.

Openbravo Broadens Support for Ubuntu with Commercial Open Source ERP Package

,----[ Quote ]
| Openbravo has announced the release of a new integrated business management
| solution, built on top of Ubuntu Server Edition, which is fully supported by
| Openbravo and its partner network. Openbravo is the leading developer of
| web-based open source Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Point of Sale
| (POS) solutions for businesses, while Canonical is the commercial sponsor of
| Ubuntu, which is rapidly becoming a very popular server platform choice for
| businesses across the globe.

Open source Database Breakthrough: 10-80 times faster

,----[ Quote ]
| The Ingres VectorWise project team has worked with Intel to evaluate database
| performance on the new Intel Xeon processor 5500 series based platform. To
| date, the results of the project have demonstrated dramatic cost and
| performance capabilities as evidenced by nearly 80 fold speed up on a query
| modelled after the Q1 query of TPC-H3 suite on the Intel Xeon processor.

A Breakthrough in Database Technology

,----[ Quote ]
| The core innovations in VectorWise are the work, primarily, of two CWI
| researchers, Peter Boncz and Marcin Zukowski. They set out to produce a
| 100-fold improvement in database performance. Ingres engineers 18 months ago
| came upon their research, called the X100 Project. Says Burkhardt: “We saw we
| could collaborate with them to take an academic project and make it
| commercial.”

Massive but Agile: next-gen databases prepare for battle

,----[ Quote ]
| Ingres for one has just announced a project with VectorWise, a spin off from
| the database research team at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica of Amsterdam, a
| research institute in mathematics and computer science. With backing from
| Intel, Ingres and VectorWise are attempting to build a database engine that
| derives an increased quotient of its power from modern hardware processor and
| storage performance.

Ingres aims to exploit modern CPUs

,----[ Quote ]
| Ingres has announced it is working with VectorWise to improve database
| performance through fully exploiting the capabilities of modern CPUs. They
| are planning to create Ingres/VectorWise, a new product which incorporates
| the new techniques, for release in mid-2010. VectorWise is a commercial spin
| off of the, Ingres funded, Amsterdam based CWI (Centrum Wiskunde &
| Informatica) database research team. Intel are supporting the project with
| engineering expertise and hardware.

Ingres "code sprint" yields new features

,----[ Quote ]
| Among the new features created at the event were a compressed backup option
| to save space when archiving databases, an enforced logging system for
| databases and the ability to suspend logging when copying a database, a
| command line history for the Ingres SQL utility and improved Soundex routines
| for better matching. Emma McGratten of Ingres, who organised the sprint
| said "It's a testament to the open source community when we can get together
| and make improvements on features and programs that are being used every day,
| by the people who depend on them".

My Linux is not your Linux
To the denizens of comp.os.linux.advocacy! So many people demonstrate in this newsgroup that they know only a Linux of Hatred and Greed, of paranoia, and of a selfish sense of entitlement. They seem always to be behaving like monkeys in reaction to human dissenters, throwing feces at one another and beating their chests pretending to know something. My Linux is not that Linux. My Linux is the Linux of Love, of sharing, friendship, community. It is a uniquely human Linux and not one for monkeys. When I speak with fellow Linux users in real life (i.e. not in the monkeyhouse of COLA) they remind me of myself: practical, freedom-loving, anti-corporate. Here in COLA however they remind me of monkeys or spoiled brats or worse, corporate sysadmins. My Linux is not your Linux. It is the human Linux that acknowledges that Linux involves human work to create, that although it is free you are not entitled to it, that although it is created in large part by volunteers, they deserve to be paid for their gifts with at least gratitude. And that monkeys and self-entitled brats and sysadmins never thank anyone. yarmfelder@yahoo.com writes: > To the denizens of comp.os.linux.advocacy!
