I have not seen anything posted about the COLA FAQ in quite some time.
Is Ken still maintaining it?

Ken, aka The Student, hasn't posted here in a long time. I really miss
his posts as he was able to express himself wothout ever stooping to
mud slinging no matter who he was replying to.
> Is Ken still maintaining it?
I don't think anyone is. There's a lot of history behind the COLA FAQ.
Caused quite a commotion for a while. For me it was just too big.
Defeated its purpose because most would never read it.

There was also the issue with "that other FAQ" (posted by someone
who I remember as "Scott", but has since morphed on). I suspect
that confused a few people (hopefully not too many).

I have a copy of the last FAQ subbmitted to this group. I intend to
format it, and then post it to http://colairc.spiralcow.com, and yes, it
was the last one published by The Student.
After it's up there, we can re-open it for editting.
Any thoughts on that?

The faq was a good idea. My only problem was its size. A regular
posting of the link along with a summary / contents would be great.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking too. I had even considered
doing a wiki, but given the level of hostility shown by some of the
disagreeables in this group, that may just be a bad idea.

FAQ?
why?
the rules are nntp are clearly defined.
as far as content, the subject says
it all 'discuss the benefits of linux'
and that is, for the most part,
what we do...

If you have the time and the space, consider putting up two versions: a
static, maintained and official faq, and a wiki-version just for fun and
to see what turns up. It would be nice to see if the forces of good can
outbalance the evil cola-orcs...

I don't know much about wiki's, but couldn't you make it so that only
non-troll COLA regulars are allowed to edit? At least some sort of
basic verification. It should keep out the worst crap ...

You can't censor a wiki! That goes against the very basic thingie it
stands for!
If it bothers you that trolls will be allowed to enter their drivel,
then just put up a pointer to the unblemished faq for newbies to follow.

you need Agile Wiki Security
<http://www.leuf.net/ww/wikiway?AgileWikiSecurity>
and a suitable authoring policy to allow fair access for all but make them
log in so they can't be annonymouse.

Sort of makes a case for good
old editing. Wonder if the
Algonquin round table had trolls
in it? Make a good article
for the New Yorker.

"The very basic thingie it stands for." That's a phrase I simply
*must* adopt.

It's a phrase so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a fox.

Okay, the first section of the cola FAQ is online, in a temproray home
on my server.
http://franoculator.ath.cx:8880/cola/faq.php
That's pretty much how I see it looking, fairly clean and easy to read.
Would it be better to have seperate documents for each chapter, or one
big document for the entire FAQ?

Although if you moderate it, you authorize the content. If you authorize
the content, and people take offense to the content, you could be exposing
yourself to a lawsuit.
Keeping it open and uncensored at least lets you wash your hands of it.
Then the chain of exposure goes to the person who posted it.
It's kind of the difference between being a publisher and being a library.

Nice to see an FAQ on here that actually takes the high-road for once,
instead of being used as a club against people who have unpopular opinions,
or who aren't part of the 'family'.

I think we would be better off submitting proposed changes via the
newsgroup, that way we can get feedback on any suggestions before
committing them to the FAQ.

This was the problem with the original FAQ. What went in / was changed
was controlled by a select few (or was it one?).
Ken's FAQ was open to discussion and he would add / change based on
what was the consensus. It just died because the huge weekly postings
were I'm sure ignored by most. The FAQ was just too big. I like the
wiki idea. It would be fun to see it evolve. :-)
