$350 for a Galaxy Tab. 2 year data plan for $25 a month.
That's a 200 MB plan on 3G with unlimited WiFi access.
According to Alan Baker, Lloyd Parsons, and Dave Fritzinger (are they all
socks?),
the better deal is a $629 iPad from AT&T with a $15 a month data plan for
250 MB (LOL) or a $25 a month plan for 2 GB, because you can save money by
turning the plan off! LOLLERCOASTER

Reading lessons later...
You missed the part that if you take the $50 rebate, you have to take a
dataplan @$39.99/month for 2 years. Of course, you can go with the
cheaper plan if you give up that $50.
But regardless, you are required to pay for one of the data plans for 2
years, which is not the case for the iPad plans.
I know that you want to think you always need a cell data plan, but many
of us don't agree. Some of us, including me, don't think I need any
cell data plan at all.
So my iPad was $600 total, and that is total over the next 2 years. So
$600/24=$25/month
Cheapest way on Tab = $350+($25*24)=$950 or $39.59 per month.
Of course, as usual, the Tab cost will be a bit more than that because
of the many bogus taxes and shit they add to cell service.
So yeah, the iPad IS a better deal.

Nope.
To qualify for the instant discount, you must activate a new line of
service with an Even More webConnectData plan of $39.99 or higher rate
plan on a two-year service agreement. Even More Family Plans may
qualify for up to five instant discounts.
To qualify for the mail-in rebate card you must activate a new line of
service on an Even More webConnect Data rate plan of $39.99 or higher
with a 2 year service agreement.

What Verizon is doing with the Galaxy Tablet is more appealing. $449,
and no data plan is required.
A tablet on T-Mobile with 3G is useless to many people because their 3G
footprint is so small.

Getting a wee bit desperate, aren't we, oh vile one? The fact is, we
*can* turn our data plan off. I have had my iPad for about 7 months
now, and I have only used the data plan for one month (2 GB for
$25.00). So, yes, the iPad is a better deal.

That's a 5 GB data plan.

Sort of like giving the price of a cell phone with no carrier charges.

How about I feel that getting the data plan I want anyway also lets me save
a big buck on a really nice tablet computer?

You forgot to give the price of your cell phone over the next two years
without any cell phone service.

So for $14.59 more a month, one can spend two years video chatting on a
Galaxy Tab, playing Flash videos and games, making camcorder videos, using
GPS, and a host of other things you can't do with an iPad even when it's
connected to a data service.

Which isn't a valid comparison since the iPad doesn't need a data plan
to be perfectly functional and useful.

So what you're saying is I can get a Galaxy Tab from Verzion for $51 less
than an iPad from Apple.

No answer, Lloyd?

Explain why the Galaxy Tab does.
Then tell how to video chat or get GPS directions on an iPad without data
service.
Prediction: Lloyd will make a run for it.

I bought my Tab from Verizon for $499, with no contract, I can cancel
my data plan any time I like. so $499/24=3D$20.79 per month.

That is what is called a non-sequitur. I don't need the data service
when I'm not traveling, since I have a wifi network at home, which is
where I generally use my iPad. When I travel (a couple times a year),
I can get the data plan. With a cell phone, the service is always
needed, as the phone is useless without it. Do you understand that?

Jerry: I bought my Tab from Verizon for $499, with no contract, I can cancel
my data plan any time I like. so $499/24=$20.79 per month.
But does it video chat better than an iPad?

DF: That is what is called a non-sequitur.
Only by stupid people.
DF: I don't need the data service

You generally use a portable media player while you're home?

Yeah. Let's me sit on my couch and surf the web, do light email, etc.,
all without having to turn on my iMac.

Huh? My cell phone is a Minolta Krazr, which doesn't play games (as
far as I know), and which I use only as a phone. My iPad does play
games (so you are lying in what you said above), and I am able to do
all that I want it to when connected to my home WiFi network.

Of course, that would only be possible if you had a brain in the first
place. Based on the evidence of your posts, that seems highly
unlikely.

Hmm... You've been pretty straight in your other postings, so I figure
you will point me to where it says you can do that. I wasn't aware of
any data service that could be turned on/off at will from Verizon.

Wasn't worth answering...
But to satisfy your curiousity. The cell phone and iPad are two
entirely different things. With the cell phone the value is only if you
have a service.
With the iPad that isn't so. I could have a service if I needed it, but
since I didn't and still don't, I have the non-3G iPad. I get a connect
to the internet every time I want it.

I dunno. I really don't care what the Tab can or cannot do as it
doesn't meet my needs. Screen is too small and it doesn't work with iOS.

Well video chat would be fine I guess, if I was 12. But that is a lot
of years ago. Hence, no value to me at all.
As to GPS. Well I have one in the car and one I use on the golf course.
What the hell would I want or need another for?

Ok, not too much bandwidth, but I suppose it could work..

Eh, wait... So they get *ten times* more data with the iPad for the
same price as the galaxy tab? That is indeed a neat deal. Or wait,
they can pay $10/month LESS and still get 25% *more* data/month with
the iPad.
Just some math:
iPad: $629 + ($15 * 24) = $989
Galaxy Tab: $350 + ($25 * 24) = $950
And that gets you 50MB more per month for the iPad, plus the ability
to actually cancel the data plan if you like (why, I have no idea).
Oops, wait a minute! Please read the fine print:
"To qualify for the instant discount, you must activate a new line
of service with an Even More webConnectData plan of $39.99 or
higher rate plan on a two-year service agreement. Even More
Family Plans may qualify for up to five instant discounts."
I'm not sure where you got that $25/month from, but in order to get
that discount, you have to get a $40/month subscription:
Galaxy Tab: $350 + ($40 * 24) = $1,310
Or it's:
Galaxy Tab: $600 + ($25 * 24) = $1,200
Assuming that there actually is a $25/month data plan for it. Couldn't
see it on the page you linked to.
Either way, that iPad deal is pretty sweet.

Thanks, I like to debate... don't really see a reason to lie about
anything.
I don't know if it is on their web page anywhere, I have a corporate
sales rep. But a quick google search will turn up many articles about
Verizon and Best Buy selling them without contracts. Now... for all I
know, I could cancel (I won't, I need 3g coverage) and then have to
require to pay something to re-establish service, such as some sort of
activation fee or whatever.

I have used the data plan for 3 months - all months when I was traveling and
wanted to be able to have access while on the road. It was nice to be able to
reserve a room 50 miles down the road an hour before I arrived when I finally
knew where I would be at the end of the day, rather then making it a long time
in advance so I needed to get somewhere no matter how tired I might be OR how
late I might be running.
I didn't want/need to rely on wifi and could do it while on the road without
stopping to find a free hot spot.

you can buy a galaxy tab without contract ($500 now from best buy),
with the benefit that it has 3g capabilities if you decide that you
need it- and even if you never do, it adds gps.

In that it you get GPS even without a 3G data plan.

OK, fair answer. What I like about AT&T's plan with the iPad is that you
don't have to pay any sort of activation fee to turn off or turn on your
3G service. I only hope that remains when Verizon starts selling the
iPhone4 in a couple weeks.
Good luck with your Galaxy Tab.

You love a good beating, don't you? A phone without a camera or carrier is
a paperweight. An iPad can play games and all sort of apps without being
connected to a damned thing.

I gave him that option 5 (or more) years ago and he decided he would rather have
me continue with the sig file and so I do.

LOL! That;s a joke, right?

Ha, thanks! I am not really so sure how great it is.. I mean it works
perfect, the size seems good, but I am finding it a tad bit useless if
you know what I mean. I did find a couple games called angry birds and
pocket legends, they were entertaining me through a family event last
night, I guess it is good for that.
And, in all honesty, this thing is rock solid, whereas my Verizon
Samsung galaxy S (Fascinate?) is an complete train wreck. I had a
Droid X which was a fantastic phone, sold it and got the Galaxy when
it came it, it is still just on 2.1 with no sign of an update from
Samsung, and some days I have to reboot up to 4 times, I think I might
have to take it back and make them replace it, I have just been
reluctant since I know they will re-flash it first, erasing everything
before they agree to replace it.
I used to have an iPhone on ATT, a 3G 8Gig, and that too was a great
phone, I just have some issues with the way Apple is conducting their
business these days so I have to refrain from giving them my money.
I am VERY liberal, and used to be a big Apple fan, going all the way
back. I used to own an Apple ][ and a C64, and ran a couple of BBS's
out of my house on them, I really bought into the "Fight the
Establishment" thing they had going on back then. Now, I feel like
they ARE the establishment... although I don't think Google is any
better. I take a little comfort in the Gates Foundation, but not a lot.

I'll let you figure out the idiocy of thinking that you need a *data

I''m sorry the Tab isn't working out so well for you. I find that I am
really quite happy with my iPad. It is great for reading books and web
surfing, as well as light email work. I can type reasonably well on the
virtual keyboard, but I prefer my iMac for any sort of content creation.
It did save my (and a co-worker's) butt while I was in NYC last summer.
The hotel we were staying at for a conference, the Grand Hyatt of all
places, had no wifi, if you can believe it. Fortunately, I had my iPad,
and I had paid for a month of 3G service, so I was able to keep working
on the iPad.

It isn't the Tab specifically. I am just not quite sure how a tablet
fits into my life. I am happy with it as a product, it seems very
solid and stable, and works brilliantly... I am just finding I have a
tool, with which there is no task to use it,

I can understand that. As I said, the iPad works out quite well for
me, since it is good for quick emails, book reading, etc. I didn't
know if it would work out at first, but now I use it so much, my wife
keeps threatening (good naturedly,I hope) to take it away from me.

I'd say that our iPad adoption was also fairly speculative early on,
but after being on vacation with it for two weeks, it simply
"clicked". Naturally, this probably has a lot to do with personal use
habits (choices): simplistically, a "creator" is going to probably
prefer a different device. Nevertheless, I think that it is safe to
say that for us, we'll probably be picking up a second one pretty much
as soon as the 2G details are known, although there's still the
likelihood of an 11" Macbook Air as a contender, since the old 12" G4
Powerbook is still great, but long in the tooth ... it is in need of a
fresh battery, but even with a brand new one, the new machines have
double the runtime.
