#options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N

and reboot.

wow! Linux hobbyware will surely rule the world (not to mention music
production)... some day.

Yea.
I can see the talent starting to steam as the engineer tries to
figure out what Linux config file he needs to alter in order to
get the session rolling.

These Linux amateurs have no clue.
None at all.

Comment out an option that most likely is perfectly sane on most
implementations of hda intel. Makes perfect sense.

No, do

# /etc/init.d/alsa-base restart

What's the deal with Ubuntu and rebooting?

    Let's see...

You've got "etc" which is root storage location for system configuration.

Then you've got "modprobe.d" which obviously deals with modules/drivers.

Then you've got a file with the name of the most common sound driver layer.

Compared to the Windows registry, this is probably downright user friendly.

....in a location you might find by yourself by poking through /etc with
a file manager or a bash terminal. This location is actually quite intuitive.
It requires some knowledge of the relevant jargon but it is at least still
somewhat self documenting.

Because that client is a paying client who will now take his
business elsewhere and the damage from word of mouth will hurt my
business even more in the long term.

<Shrug> Dunno, but it's not necessary. Maybe the OP just decided to do it.

Maybe it's me, but I've seen a lot of restarts suggested after Ubuntu
updates.

Maybe that is part of Ubuntu's primary audience: windows converts

That depends upon whether it's the user rebooting Ubuntu on
purpose or it's Ubuntu rebooting itself due to instability
problems.

Quite possibly, but as I said, it isn't necessary. For example, the
"Hardware Drivers" app tells you to reboot after its installed the nVIDIA
drivers. All I do is log out, 'restart x-server' from the menu & log back
in.

Ubuntu is a pain in the hole- you need to recompile the latest
NVidia drivers using a set version of the compiler, for example, when
changing kernels.

What % of the -sheeple- run Windows 7, Vista or XP?

Certainly, because that would be the way to do it.
Nonetheless, people coming from windows would feel the need to reboot
because "something has changed"

You're not a convert at all. You're a Windows user and developer.

At least they don't claim "Linux is about choice" then 1/2 of them run to

Install the programs, in my case Nuendo, and it works.

I'm talking specifics here, not generalities, and Linux audio is

Exactly...
I stated my point which was, what happens when you have to start
screwing around with Linux drivers during a session?

Answer: The client leaves and you lose money.

Of course Rick starts playing semantic games when he knows full
well what I meant.

It's like "we will all (people living in Boston) die if they drop
a nuke on Boston".

He will reply " has it happened to you?"
and so forth....

He's a time wasting idiot and I don't know how he escaped from my
bozo bin, but he is back in.

So you were not just feigning ignorance - you really did not know what he
meant. OK.

If Rick has valuable ideas, he is very, very poor at expressing them. Some
people are just poor with the written word though... maybe he is a lot
smarter than he presents himself.

Rick is a time wasting game player.
Others get sucked into his web.
I won't waste my time.

I expressed exactly what I meant and he knows this.
He chooses to bob and weave.

I won't play his game.

That doesn't happen with raw Debian. It will even prompt you to let it
restart services for which dependencies are loaded.

Same thing with the boot splash screens. I hate not being able to see that
the boot is progressing fine, but some may be comforted by the throbber.

Take comfort in the throbber.

DFS is a real Einstein, ain't he?

Although I'm sure there are major numbers of Linux converts from the DOS and
UNIXen crowd as well.

Compare to all of those Windows, to me, Linux is a breath of fresh air.

I have gentoo boot splash screens and when there's a problem the system
switches to the verbose output so that you can see what's gone awry.

Boot splash is elegant. I suppose it isn't really that important or
noticeable on a linux OS that is so stable and doesn't require reboots
except for kernel updates.

Maybe if Windwoes wasn't so crappy, people wouldn't convert. After
all, there's certain advantages to being part of the herd...

     Yes it does.

    No it isn't.

It certainly isn't so for the vast majority of Windows or Mac using types.
