Build a Better Sub-$200 Linux PC: For a Few Dollars More...

,----[ Quote ]
| As we’ve hopefully shown, building a $200 PC is a fun experiment—and, provided
| you really modulate your expectations, you can get a solidly usable computer
| out of the deal. But when it comes right down to it, we admit that the $200
| figure is a bit arbitrary. Is anyone going to complain if the final total is
| $225.87, or even $250.94? Of course not. The goal is to find components that
| have the best balance between low prices and high (or, perhaps more
| appropriately, decent) performance. And if you’re willing and/or able to spend
| a bit more money, you can get a better system still. Here are a few of our
| recommended upgrades if you want to take your $200 to slightly more expensive—
| but still solidly affordable—places.

It may be counted as a Windows 'sale', but it's really a Linux sale.
I've just ordered a new HP 'mini' 5102 netbook for my wifi business. http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/review-hp-mini-5102-netbook-20100430/ Because it comes with a hard disk and vista7 'cripplestarter' edition, these lovely netbooks which have a aluminium lid and body, and a 1366x768 screen, are being dumped at a fraction of their original price, because no one is interested in buying them. I can buy them brand new in Australia for under $500 AUD, including the HP 6 cell battery. The reason I have ordered one is the higher screen resolution, because while my EeePC900 screen of 1024x600 works fine and gets the job done, I'd prefer not to scroll down to read most webpages. Besides, although it stills work like new, my EeePC900 is a couple of years old now and it's time to be handed down to a grandchild after I install Sugar OS on it :) The 5102 Gigabit network port means faster network IPERF testing, and the a,b,g,n mode wifi means more radio capability. Internal Bluetooth is a bonus, for easy cell phone tethering etc. Naturally the microsoft windows OS (including HP’s utilities and trialware, such as Microsoft Office and some registration screens that require your attention) that comes preinstalled on it won't see the light of day as it will be replaced by Linux as soon as I fit the 30Gb OCZ SSD drive I have also purchased for it ($170). IBM Linux chief: Chasing desktop Windows a 'dead-end'
<quote> LinuxCon 2009 IBM says that battling for desktop market share against Windows is a "dead-end" for Linux. Sutor drew up several possible futures for the Linux desktop in the years ahead, including Linux going away altogether, one distribution dominating Linux desktops, one distro dominating all desktops, Linux reaching parity with Microsoft and Apple, and desktop Linux disappearing altogether and making the whole issue moot. "Most people say, 'I don't want to be bothered. It just works. I want to do the other parts of my job, and I want to go home,'" said Sutor. "So this, I think, is going to be a major, major portion that determines possibly some of those futures. What are we really trying to do with this thing? I think making it a complete drop-in replacement is a dead-end strategy. Sutor argued that it's a mistake to try to sell or convince people to use something when they're not interested and will never use it. "Don't waste your time," he said. "So in the same way, with Linux desktops, you've got to decide ... who are the real potential users and focus on them to the exclusion of other people who - frankly - just aren't interested," Sutor said. </quote> http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2009/09/21/linuxcon_2009_sutor_keynote/ On Mon, 28 Sep 2009 11:20:18 -0400, Ezekiel wrote: > <quote> > LinuxCon 2009 IBM says that battling for desktop marke...
