While the fight for desktop dominance is still raging somewhere in the
distance, Linux has quietly succeeded in the places no one thinks to look.
It's being used in mobile phones, set-top boxes, media streamers and
routers. It's being used to fuel the London Stock Exchange and to provide
in-flight entertainment for thousands of travellers.

And it does this without ceremony and, mostly, without anyone noticing.

We don't know who struck first - us, or Linux. But we know it was us that
scorched the sky.

It's only your *claim* that Linux dominates those areas. Like the
blithering idiot 7, you can't provide any reasonable evidence.

For instance, my ATT UVerse DVR runs WinCE. My wife's iPhone runs iOS.
  My SlingBox doesn't run Linux/OSS.

And in case you hadn't heard, the London Stock Exchange does NOT run on
that Unix/Linux-based Millenium system

http://www.londonstockexchange.com/products-and-services/millennium-exchange/technicalinformation/technicalinformation.htm

And what's this bullshit about a "fight for desktop dominance"? How
can Linux fight on the desktop when it can't even be given away? When
the best office suite it has is OpenOffice?

Another failed Robin T. Cox post.

My D-Link DAP-1522 wireless bridge:

Running: Linux 2.4.X
OS details: Linux 2.4.18 - 2.4.32 (likely embedded)

According to Gartner, the Q3, 2010 smartphone sales show Android with 25%
and Symbian with 37% - at least 62% open source operating systems. Ios at
17% and Windows Mobile at 3%.

raytard,

I missed the part where Symbian is Linux. Show us.

I didn't say Symbian is Linux - stop trying to put words into my mouth.
With Andoid showing 25% it certainly outranks IOS PLUS Windows Mobile.
Symbian is at least Open Source, as I said.

I guess DFS is so anxious to drool into COLA that he forgets to read what
he's responding to. Symbian started its life with Psion. Nice little PDAs.
Still own a few of these.

So glad you asked. The reports are that Nokia plans to start using MeeGo
to replace Symbian. MeeGo (a successor to Maemo) is indeed Linux based.
It seems not unreasonable to expect MeeGo to pick up the Symbian market
share. Seems quite likely that Linux may indeed have 75% of the market
shortly.

The title of the post is "Linux dominates", not "Linux will dominate".

It is as far as Microsoft is concerned. When Ballmer sneered that "Linux
is a cancer", "Linux infringes 235 Microsoft patents", "60 percent [of
servers] run Linux ... so I don't like it", and "Linux is Microsoft's
number one competitor", he wasn't talking about a kernel, or even GNU,
he was talking about "Open Source". Frothing lunatics like DFS and
Ballmer don't make the distinction, it's all just "non-proprietary"
software, or more pertinently - not Microsoft monopolyware.

And even then, Sybian is still Open Source, and Open Source dominates
everywhere outside the desktop. DooFy is just clutching at straws.
Again.

It seems clear that if the desktop ever dies, so too will Microsoft. I
certainly hope so, anyway. And the cause will most likely be Open Source
and Free Software. /That's/ the point. Call it Linux, call it Symbian,
call it Mary for all I care, the result will be the same regardless: an
end to Microsoft's reign of terror.

You're extremely deluded and ignorant if you think MS is going to die
off in your lifetime. They long ago reached the status of "too
important to fail"; the US Govt would bail them out in a heartbeat.

You scum-sucking cola twerps can rejoice over every little MS misstep
until the day you die, but there's no doubt whatsoever that they will
outlast every one of you.

Linux dominates you. It compels you to waste your life here attacking
it and defending M$.
