I'm not buying into iPid rubbish which doesn't have USB or play flash content.
So it looks as though I'm buying JooJoo with its support of USB and flash
and putting Ubuntu or Ubuntu remix on it. 300 pounds is a lot for a pad when others are due out for 100 pounds.
So its a waiting game for now.

7,

Calling the iPad the iPid, Apple:Appil, and the like is just playing into
the hands of the trolls. There are true weaknesses enough to point out
without having to resort to such things.

And the only thing that will --kill-- the iPad, iPhones and iPods is
Apple. They, like Microsoft, will all be around for a while.

Nope. This is something completely separate.
This is a byproduct of UK regulations and food for thought for UK regulators
and internet historians. In UK you are not allowed to speak your mind.

Personally I have severe doubts over such claims.
Pads will trade on thinner margins than PCs and netbooks for the volumes
that are needed to service existing market demand, so it makes sense to put
Linux on it and forget other osen and let the manufacturers keep all the
hardware margins. It is only right that PC vendors should be given the
opportunity to sell and install competing OSen once hardware is delivered to
their shop so that they too can make money in pre-install distro marketing,
install and upgrading by involving themselves in the software margins
business. It is worth billions. There is more money for retailers if they
engaged in that than simply become dim box shifting operations. They can
make deals with distro makers to install the choice of OS into pads.
The choices having been made in on-line shopping baskets.

Apparently the SEC reports bear them out.

Apple is doing quite well margin and profit wise these days.

As far as the other platforms go, they will be supported by "vendor
install ware"... vendors paying to have their crap installed.

Neither Apple, nor Microsoft have to die in order for OSS to "win", which
I define as being more widely available, and chosen by users.

Agreed on the playing with names. I think what's going to kill the iPad is
that it's a tablet and, besides being a toy and a very expensive eReader,
it has no practical purpose. That said, I don't see any huge surge of Linux
tablets either -- unless they're cheap enough that people afford them as
(basically) toys. I think Always Innovating's Touch Book is pretty
impressive, however -- but that's because it's a netbook *and* a tablet.

Let's not forget censorship based on the subjective economic,
political, and sexual preferences of Steve Jobs and other apple top
executives. I went to the verizon store and saw the Droid, and went
to the "shop for apps" and because the "nanny-gate" hadn't been set,
you could see the thousands of applications including both liberal and
conservative media, more "mature" entertainment, and other content
that was clearly excluded by apple. Many of the applications were
written in Java s well, which Apple doesn't permit.

For all of these reasons, it's likely that Android and Chromium will
do to iPhone and iPad what Windows did to the original Mac and MacSE
back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Keep in mind that though
Apple has the largest percentage of the "Smart-phone" market, Linux
and Linux-based technologies now power a substantial portion of both
the smart-phone AND the media-phone Symbian based systems such as the
LG Touch, Versa, and Env. Other traditional phones such as the Razr,
Env-3, and several LG phones - are actually running full-blown
embedded Linux.

Remember that the iPad is Apple's response not to the e-book or
kindle, but the NetBook and SmartBook. These devices have become very
popular, and Linux created a huge market for them, even when Microsoft
was reluctantly scrambling to offer Windows XP for them.
Unfortunately for Microsoft, Windows 7 Starter just isn't cutting it
as a NetBook platform. People are buying the laptop, but often they
are opting to downgrade to XP or installing Linux.

Several NetBooks are also capable of booting Linux from the built-in
flash, or from SDHC chips, making Linux much easier to install and
configure. With improved support for NTFS, it's possible to use the
Windows storage for your Linux systems. Since the 8 gig SDHC are as
cheap as $29 (US) - it's real easy to try out several Linux
distributions - then if you get one you really like, you can install
it in as little as 10 minutes - less time than it takes to boot some
Windows laptops to a fully functional state.

The GOOD thing about Windows 7 starter, is that Microsoft makes it
really easy to run inexpensively.

Numbers do matter but game changers are afoot.
Blackberry has left appil in the dust last year.
Google android is damaging it even more this year
lifting for example the whole UK market for mobile
phones.

The death they feel is relative. Linux sells some 5 to 10 million
embedded Linux gadgets PER DAY and growing.

I guess that's what years of settling for third or fourth best has done
to you, 7. You are excited about a device that makes 720p video look
like a slideshow, gets hot while doing so, and has 2.5 hours battery
life. But hey, stay away from video, and you can goose it up to a
whopping 5 hours--less than half what an iPad can get playing constant
video without dropping frames.

That's a bit garbled, Rex, but I think that what you are trying to say is
that the inclusion of Windows 7 Starter Edition has little effect on the
selling price of the total unit?

I'd certainly agree with that.
It's even possible (after allowing for fees for installing trial-ware) that
the installation of Windows 7 Starter actually *reduces* the cost of the
unit, in that they'd need to sell it for more if they sold it bare?

For the moment, I think that this is the best "compromise" that we can get
on many devices. The manufacturer has to install *something* to show that
it works. If that has to be Windows Starter (because many people want
Windows), and it's adding nothing to the cost, I'm prepared to accept it -
for the moment.
What I *would* find interesting is the cost ("Anytime Upgrade"?) from
Starter to other editions.
I don't suppose that you or others could provide me with the figures?
For instance, the upgrade prices *from* W7 Home Premium, in the U.K. are
listed as:-
   to Professional £120
   to Ultimate £125

I'd like to know what the (3) numbers are starting with Starter Edition.

Mr Gruff,

Why are you unable to do your own research?

Whereas you can be filed under "idiot". There is this thing called
Google. It's new but its good. While I realise you and your ilk get all
your info from Spamowitz, others of us like to do our OWN research and

You've often requested someone on cola do research for you. Why?

I'm not going to do it this time. Go to the Microsoft website yourself.

This sounds like appil crap marketing gasping for air and asstroturfing
for money but ipiddy has no USB support and all my data including video
are easily transferred on USB sticks.
