"Both intel core 2 duo (64 bit) machines freeze when running ubuntu
10.04 with GNOME, usually within 10 minutes of logging in. (When I say
freeze, I mean everything simply stops - no mouse, no keyboard no
control of any kind. The display simply stops and resembles a screensave
snapshot.)
Now both of these machines run fine with Ubuntu 10.04 KDE. These are not
identical systems. They have different motherboards, different chipsets,
different graphics processors and different network cards, but both
behave identically. It makes no difference if I use PS2 mouse/keyboard,
usb mouse/keyboard or wireless mouse/keyboard. It also makes no
difference if I connect to the network with a wireless card or with
straight ethernet cable.
Before installing Ubuntu 10.04, both machines worked fine under earlier
versions of Ubuntu GNOME."

Yeah, but that 10 minutes is the happiest 10 minutes of your life, isn't it?
