I never expected that.    It just doesn't jive with how people like you keep 
telling everybody the iPhone is better than all other phones.   Why does 
AT&T need new phone models when they've already got the best phone there is

I don't think I've actually ever replied to you but if you think that
when people say that AT&T is the exclusive provider of iPhones in the
U.S. you thought (as Zara seems to) that it meant that AT&T was going
to exclusively sell iPhones you are just as crazy as most people say

As of midday Monday, the store had sold less than half of its supply
of 20 devices.

That's not to say that folks weren't lining up. Unfortunately, nearly
all of the 200 people who showed up on Market Street this morning were
there to snag tickets for a launch concert featuring Maroon 5, as
opposed to getting their hands on one of the new phones. Microsoft did
manage to make the most of the queue, requiring that concert-goers at
least get a demo of Windows Phone 7 before getting their passes to the
show, which takes place at the Fillmore this evening.
Customers at an AT&amp;T retail store in San Francisco get a hands-on
demo with two Windows Phone 7 launch devices.

The question was if the iPhone is so spectacular then why sell other
phones... there was no claim that they *could not* based on *any* deal with
Apple.  Steve jumped to a conclusion that is not supported by what he
replied to.

Now, I can see where the initial comment was poorly worded - but Steve jumps

And this is evidence that my reading - not Steve's - is the correct one
(though that never has been in question, really).  Steve assumed the "why"
was based on some contractual obligation and not on just asking... well,

I do not think anyone really expected that: but that was the question.  If
Steve was at all knowledgeable about the topic he could have answered it...
instead he assumed the least-reasonable interpretation of the question.

Well, Steve was talking about how an exclusive deal meant, as he read the
term, to mean that they could not sell anything else!

Steve has tried to turn this around, but he is the only one who claimed to
have read the term "exclusive" to mean that (other than those of us who read

I just re-read the thread to make sure I was being fair to Steve - had I
been mistaken I would have apologized.  But I was not mistake: Steve is the
one who first came up with the idea that an "exclusive" arrangement meant
that a company could not sell other products.  That is not at all what was
meant, as would be clear to anyone who is familiar with the concept.

This does not mean, by the way, that I think they should not sell other
phones because they have the "best"... one: the best costs more than lower
end phones and, of course, different people might disagree on what phone
serves them best.  

But Steve did not answer that way or any way that was reasonable: he jumped
to the bizarre notion that an "exclusive" deal means something completely
other than what it does.

Having now read the thread I was completely right: Steve is the one who made
the mistake and is trying to turn it around on others.  Steve was the first
to come up with the idea that an "exclusive" contract would not allow a
company to sell other products.  All others who have talked about that
obviously wrong idea have done so in the context of noting Steve Carroll was
wrong.

Steve jumped to the ignorant idea that having "an exclusive on one item" is
associated with the idea that "you sell that item exclusively".  To be
clear, he thought he was correcting someone else - but *nobody* but Steve
ever talked about the idea.  It is Steve's idea and his alone.

And yet he tries to reverse roles and pretend someone else came up with the
idea.  He is not being honest.  If he was honest, and not ignorant, he would
admit he read it wrong based on his own pre-conceived notions and let it
drop... but instead he will blame everyone and their mother first.

it had better hope that Windows Phone 7 makes a bigger impact than it
appeared to be having at one AT&T store here.

As of midday Monday, the store had sold less than half of its supply
of 20 devices.

That's not to say that folks weren't lining up. Unfortunately, nearly
all of the 200 people who showed up on Market Street this morning were
there to snag tickets for a launch concert featuring Maroon 5, as
opposed to getting their hands on one of the new phones. Microsoft did

least get a demo of Windows Phone 7 before getting their passes to the
show, which takes place at the Fillmore this evening.
Customers at an AT&amp;T retail store in San Francisco get a hands-on
