Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.032 Available for 64-bit x86_64 Architecture

Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.032 Available for 64-bit x86_64
Architecture

20. Aug. 2004

Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.032 is the first version Lineox
released for x86_64 in addition to IA32 (known also as i386)
architecture. x86_64 release doesn't have GFS (Global File System), but
otherwise it has all the programs that IA32 version has. GFS was removed
because it confuses the installation program to install additional wrong
kernel versions. GFS will however be offered as a part of Lineox
Enterprise Linux updates in a similar way as previously added Lineox
Application Server.

The x86_64 release requires either AMD Opteron or Athlon64 CPU based
computer. Some new Intel Xeon and Pentium IV CPU's that have EM64T
(Extended Memory 64 Technology) should also be able to run this version.

Plenty of Bugs and Limitations Gone

DVD versions of Lineox Enterprise Linux are distributed as image files
from Apache web server. They are over 2GB in size and must be split to
many pieces because the 32-bit versions of Apache can't handle any files
bigger than 2GB. This is also a problem for busy sites because log files
may grow over that limit. Another example dear to Lineox programmers is
mc (Midnight Commander, a Norton Commander clone). It is no longer
actively maintained and suffers also from 2GB file size limit. It is
however very handy for programmers dealing with rpm packages because you
can "dive" in to rpm packages, view the files in them etc. and thus it
helps to avoid cluttering disks with many small files. So 64 bits gives
a new lease of life to many old programs too. Big file support is also
comparatively new code and should therefore have more latent bugs than
simpler small file code.

"With the already low prices of 64-bit computers, I believe Lineox won't
buy any more 32-bit machines." Said Raimo Koski, one of the Lineox founders.

Availability, Pricing

Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.032 x86_64 release is available
as free download, but next versions will be available first as paid
downloads only. The most recent IA32 release of Always Current Lineox
Enterprise Linux available for free is 3.011 and new x86_64 releases
will be also made free with 3 to 6 months delay. x86_64 pricing will be
same as for IA32.

Lineox Releases Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 x86_64 and First Always Current x86_64 Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.x Versions 14. Mar. 2005 Lineox has released today Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 x86_64 version which is built from the source packages available from ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/4/en/os/x86_64/SRPMS Lineox has replaced some graphics files and changed or replaced some other files mainly because of trademark issues while retaining full compatibility. This release includes also updated packages which were built from 28 source packages available from ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/enterprise/4AS/en/os/SRPMS Yumex, a graphical front-end to yum package management system was added to x86_64 version because apt doesn't properly support multiple architecture packages. Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 x86_64 has only i386 versions of OpenOffice.org and HelixPlayer. Also many browser plug-ins are available only as x86 versions, so Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 x86_64 version has many x86 libraries. When used as server oriented system Lineox Enterprise Linux 4.0 x86_64 version shoudn't need any x86 packages, but as workstation oriented system there is some need for them and then using apt as a package management system is impossible. Apt and and it's graphical front-end synaptic are still included and preferred as more mature package management solutions. Lineox has released also two Always Current x86_64 versions of Lineox...

Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.037 with Update 3 Available 7. Sep. 2004 Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 3.037 adds Update 3 compiled from source packages from ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/enterprise/3AS/en/os/SRPMS (release notes available at http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/release-notes/as-x86/RELEASE-NOTES-U3-x86-en.html (x86 architecture) and http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/release-notes/as-amd64/RELEASE-NOTES-U3-x86_64-en.html (AMD 64-bit x86_64 architecture)). In version 3.037 the installation environment was rebuilt, so it offers now better hardware support. Lineox has avoided respins because they mean that different versions behave differently and that can cause bigger negative effects than better hardware support. The x86_64 release requires either AMD Opteron or Athlon64 CPU based computer. Lineox Enterprise Linux 2.1 Released with Always Current Version and Update Service for Lineox and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1
30. Aug. 2004 Lineox Enterprise Linux 2.1 is compiled from sources available from ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/2.1AS/en/os/i386/SRPMS. The only packages that were altered are redhat-logos and anaconda. This makes Lineox Enterprise Linux 2.1 highly compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 AS. Always Current Lineox Enterprise Linux 2.1.007 contains all available updates including Update 5. Lineox has reserved lower version numbers to older Update levels and we may make Always Current versions based on these if there is enough customer demand because some commercial software packages are supported only on certain Update levels. Main reason for making Lineox Enterprise Linux 2.1 was to create a platform on which to build updated packages from source packages published by Red Hat, Inc. which continue to be available up to May 31 2009. Lineox self plans to use these packages to keep some of our servers updated, which are still running Red Hat 7.2 based Spectra Linux 1.1. This is very painless migration because Lineox Enterprise Linux 2.1 is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 and that in turn on Red Hat 7.2. Most painless transfer is however using our affordable Update Service on existing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 systems. Lineox doesn't offer any other support than package updates, but in most cases that is all what up and running systems need. Availability, Pricing Lineox Enterprise Linux 2.1 is a...

This afternoon I compiled the SQLite 3.8 Tcl bindings for windows and 64-bit linux, and thought I would try a 32-bit compile on the linux box too. I already had the gcc multilib packages installed. First I did: ../configure --host=i686-linux-gnu "CFLAGS=-m32" "CXXFLAGS=-m32" "LDFLAGS=-m32" (all on one line). That seemed to run okay, but make failed with: gcc -shared -m32 -pipe -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -Wall -fPIC -m32 -Wl,--export-dynamic -o libsqlite3.8.0.so tclsqlite3.o -lpthread -L/home/gsnyder/ActiveTcl-8.6/lib -ltclstub8.6 /us...
