HP DVD300i on SuSE Linux 9.0

  • Follow

I currently have an HP CD Writer 8110i installed in my AMD machine.
For Christmas, I received a DVD300i. What do I need to do to my Linux
installation to make it ready for the H/W installation and then after
installation to be able to write to the various types of media?

Thanks.

If this is a DVD-RW, you'll need to use cdrecord-dvdpro, dvdrecord, or
cdrecord-dvdhack to burn DVD-R(W)s. If this is a DVD+RW, you'll need
the dvd+rw-tools to burn DVD+R(W)s. If this device burns both DVD+ and
DVD- media, use the appropriate program for the medium you're burning.
You can use cdrecord or cdrdao in the usual way to burn CD-R(W)s. You
shouldn't have to modify anything in your LILO or GRUB configuration if
you're using this new DVD(-+) to replace an older CD-RW; the
"hdX=ide-scsi" will still be valid even though newer cdrecord and
dvd+rw-tools releases can work with ATAPI DVD/CD recordable devices
without the need for ide-scsi emulation.

Playing DVD-ROMs using Xine or mplayer should just work as long as you
have libdvdcss already and you have the dvdnav plugin for Xine for DVD
menu support.
