Alcatel Speedtouch USB under linux, firmware
I have one of these (it's the one that looks like a turquoise manta fish)
and I want to use it under linux (RH 7.1).
There are several articles on it.
English:
http://ldp.kernelnotes.de/HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO/speedtouchusb.html
http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/DSL-HOWTO/speedtouchusb.html
French:
http://lea-linux.org/hardware/pack-xtense.php3
http://www.chez.com/speedtouch/
These refer to a firmware management utility, but since Thomson have taken
over support, the link to Alcatel's site is broken. I tried contacting
Thomson's support and they're not very helpful.
Assuming I can ever get this (some say it exists in the windows
installation, under a different name), are the changes it makes to the
modem's microcode permanent? Will it still work with windows?
I know I could use the linux box as a proxy (thus, I don't really need to
put the modem back on the windows box), but there are other people in the
house who only use windoze, it's easier if they plug/unplug the modem when
they want it. Trust me ;-)

Just take a look at that URL, it should answer all your questions:
http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/
Have a nice day,

I don't see where it answers either the question of where to obtain
mgmt.o, or that of the permanence or otherwise of the firmware upload.

Try this location:
http://www.vnet.ndirect.co.uk/linux/btFAQ/
Scroll down the page for instructions on how to install manually and
where to get the files.

Not sure if it's still there, but there used to be a ,something>.tgz that
contained the mgmt.o file. All you have to do is unpack this and put it in
the right directory. And offcouse setup the right info for your
connection.
It's the way I used to do it anyways. ;-)
Pete
P.S. Let me know if you still can't find it, I might have it somewhere.

If you had *really* read the site, you should have found this (long) URL:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/speedtouch/speedtouch/doc-linux/howto/SpeedTouch-HOWTO-en.html?rev=1.3#requis
Here is a small part of what you *should* have read (the 3 last lines
below should help you...)
Have a nice day,
Required:
* OpenSource drivers
* Alcatel's microcode for the modem
* A kernel with usb support (2.4.x kernels are a good choice but
2.2.x kernels work too)
* pppd
Download OpenSource drivers
Download the latest version from sourceforge project's Homepage
Download Alcatel's Modem firmware
What you need to download is the modem's microcode provided with
Alcatel's drivers. You have two possibilities:
It can be found in the form of two files:
* A mgmt.o file found in the GNU/Linux package
* A alcaudsl.sys file found in the WindowsTM package
