Like a lot of people in recent times, I am considering moving across
to a Linux distro, yet to decide in the preferred, and having a lot of
problems running Live CD\DVDs typically supplied with PC magazines.
I have recently built a new system with the following consist:
GA-P35-DS3 Motherboard
4 Gig DDR2 Memory
2 ASUS Lightscribe DVD ROMS (SATA)
2 Samsung 250Gig SATA HDDs
1 Western Digital 80Gig IDE (Old drive. Is flagged as drive G under
WinXP)
So, basically the compete system is SATA. Which I think may be the
root of my problems, but unsure how to get around it.
When I place the Live CD in the DVD drive then boot (in this scenario
I'm trying KNOPPIX 5.1) I am faced with the following error messages:
Enabling DMA acceleration for: hde [WDC WD800BB]
Enabling DMA acceleration for: hdg [SAMSUNG SP2504C]
Can't find KNOPPIX filesystem, sorry.
Dropping you to a (very limited) shell.
Press reset button to quit.
I suspect that as the system boots from the Live CD it doesn't contain
the drivers for the SATA DVD drives.
So, how do I best attack this issue ??
I have tried a number of different distro's but end up with the same
result.
Cheers.
Fritzables.

Many live cd's have alternate kernel versions and configurations that you
can use to boot in most cases. Normally pressing some of the F# keys at
the "boot:" prompt will list some for you. Or there's a text file in
the / of the cd that lists your options. You probably just need to
utilize those options.

I had similar failures with a friend's newly build 64-bit system, which
is all SATA -- DVD burner and hard drives. The boot process would hang
with all the distros and LiveCDs I tried, except for Fedora 7 i686 32-bit
Live CD. It worked!

Thanks Stef,
I was going to give Ferora 7 a go but they say the latest version
isn't all that user friendly.

Same with my Toshiba laptop. Only distr's that would complete booting
from DVD were the *ubuntu family, Fedora 7, and PCLinuxOS.
They are using a more up-to-date kernel than the rest.

Who are "they?" All the reviews I've read, say that 7 is the best Fedora
to date. I played around with the 7 LiveCD and found it at least as
usable as 6, but with improvements to simplify set ups and
configuration. However, it as well as all previous Fedora versions are
very, very Open Source. So. no non-Open Source stuff is included like
Flash or Java. You have to add it yourself after the install, which is a
pain.

Maybe, _if_ you can get the sucker to install.
"Bugzilla Bug 242956: F7 CDROM installation method fails to recognize CD/DVD
drive."
Stops me cold doing both the 32 and 64 bit installs on a ThinkPad T61.
FC6 installs OK. I'm not the only one. The changes to the
sata/pata/ide/libata/whatever drivers aren't quite stable yet - IMHO.
Hopefully soon.

G'Day Stef,
Actually it was one of the Aussie PC mags that did a recent review of
F7 and basically they indicated their impressions were that it was
cluncky.
I like the look of Fedora and if it loads with out the hassle I've
been having - I believe I'll give it a go.
Cheers

Is the Thinkpad the only system you tried it on? I've boot up the 7
LiveCD (but haven't installed it on the hard drives) of 4 systems from 7
years old to brand, spanking top-of-the-line new, and it booted and ran
with no problems. Maybe, the problem is a quirk in the Thinkpad.
Something proprietory or non-standard, maybe?
My test systems? You had to ask. Dell Inspiron 5000e, about 6 or 7
years old. A 7 year old 1 GHz Duron, 768 MB RAM , MSI K7T Pro2-A, Socket
A. A 6 month old Athlon 64, 2 GB RAM, Abit KN9, Socket AM2. And
finally, about a month old Intel Core Duo, Asus MB (don't have the model
number), 4 GB RAM, all SATA drives -- HDs and DVD. This last one is the
system that all of my Linux Live (FC6 Live, Ubuntu 6.10, PCLinuxOS 2007,
Xandros 4 magazine cover DVD) or Install CDs (FC6 32 & 64-bit, SUSE
10.something, Debian Etch), except for Fedora 7, choked on due to the
SATA DVD.

So far the T61 is the only one I need a new install on. Since FC6
installed OK I don't think it's anything new and unusual in the
hardware. More likely an issue w/libata is my WAG.
Just for the record, the 32 and 64 bit install CDs fail w/the above
CD not found error(the one they just booted from...) and the live 32
bit CD fails w/"root filesystem not found".
I'm not really down on Fedora. I've installed all the FCs from
1 to 6 and used them for driver development - and to give occasional
feedback to RedHat.
My point (if there is one) is that the Fedora distro isn't for the
faint of heart. After all, it is _intended_ to be bleeding edge.

You could always try to upgrade FC6 to 7. Not recommended by Fedora, but
they do give detailed instructions, if you want to try.

Did you checksum the CDs after you burned them as well as the original
download? I've gotten write errors when burning, either a true write
error or a bad CD.
This the type of error I got with other Live CDs -- not the Fedora 7
one. It worked. -- when booting from a SATA DVD drive. Startup would go
okay until it attempted to mount the DVD drive. Either it would just
hang or report "root filesystem not found...."
Got a similar senerio trying to boot an old Compaq notebook at my local
LUG meeting. Tried several distros. All distros tried, except PCLinuxOS
2007, would hang at some (and different) point. Well... It WAS a
Compaq. Probably too much proprietary hardware.

Interesting suggestion. I may try it but w/the sata/pata driver
problems in FC7 I'm not optimistic.

Yep, I ran the checksums. Like I said somewhere upthread, it's a
known FC7 bug.

Kind of a crap-shoot at this point, especially in the wild and wooly
(proprietary hardware) world of laptops...

Nice thing about upgrading through the online repository is that the
latest versions of everything get installed. This would include bug
fixes. This might enable you to run 7. Worse that could happen is that
it doesn't work, and you have to re-install 6.
Before trying, though, read the Release Notes on 7 to see if they've
fixed your driver problem.
